I was wondering the whole copyright thing, too. We went with Jet Jaguar...and old Godzilla character. Half the time I'm thinking Godzilla people need money...they would sue...the other half I'm like, whatever, any publicity they can get would be good.
Eh. We aren't getting famous enough to sue. So we're good.
Last night after posting that "Royalties" thing got me thinking about how much of a ripoff Mecha Shiva is.
We ripped our name off from a cartoon.
We ripped our style off from the hippy jamband scene.
We rip our audience off by being lazy asses (kind of the no one wants to pay five bucks to watch you guys jam for 30 minutes thing).
Everything we've recorded and released has been done via a ripped off DAW.
That said,....we don't expect any money for what we've released. Even the stuff on our bandcamp is also available as a torrent or to listen to via soundcloud.
If and when we start releasing for real EPs and LPs I'm happy to pay for a license for the DAW and whatever else it takes to be legit.
i went to all licensed DAW's and software a few years back more for stability and support than for legal worries. i'm with y'all. if i was making my money off of recordings i'd definitely buy all the stuff i use.
i'm still a nerd, but as i get older i don't WANT to figure out why stuff isn't working. i just want to USE the nerdy stuff. so the only software i use right now is Maschine, Komplete and Cubase. all stuff paid i bought all legit and proper like. i LIKE having a way to contact the releasing company if i'm having issues. i just.... i just don't want to DEAL with all that shit.

And I remember reading somewhere that it could be argued that every piece of music ever written is a ripoff of some other piece of music written prior, and that one is a rip of another earlier piece, ad that one is...lather, rinse, repeat...

Well, really, we're all just copying that first monkey who struck something just for the love of the sound or yelled for the hell of it.
