Although “Try Not to Breathe” had its peak pertinence 5 years ago, yes, agreed.

As soon as I read that, my mind played the sample "Have you no sense of decency sir?"... I haven't listened to that album for a long time now, and you just took me back in time a long way... and sadly just as prophetic now as it was then.

has anyone else noticed that one of the fallbacks for manufacturers who don’t want to copy Fender and Gibson designs is to reference the old National and Supro cutaway-and-a-half Res-O-Glass bodies? i first caught this when flipping through YouTube and i saw a EVH Wolfgang and said “hey, wait a minute…” and i’ve subsequently seen other guitars that echo that shape including a rather wack Eastman. just a spare thought that passed through.

So, today I noticed the guitar is still for sale. So I contacted the seller about weight and tuning stability. Turns out he's one of the veeery few luthiers in Germany who actually runs a successful business with original designs and an excellent reputation for top quality work. He says he just overhault the guitar and it's in perfect working condition.

if that’s something you need, a Japanese copy is probably optimal.

Let's be honest - who needs a double neck guitar? :animal:

I passed. Maybe next time it surfaces.

after feeling like i'd "solved" gain staging (for my own purposes at least), i'm faced with a conundrum that i annoyingly can't quite put down.

for reference, i use 100w superbass with a boss blues driver set to "a bit crunchy" and i leave that on. i hit it with fuzz or eqd plumes to enlouden as needed. i also use the knobs on my guitar to get cleaner sounds. the blues driver + whatever combos has always worked to sell the effect of switching on a (example) muff type fuzz without the unbearable volume spike of switching a muff on into a fully clean amp with tonnes of headroom before it does the pleasant thing of compressing. it's a compromise that works and has the hefty low end when i need it but is controllable.

then at rehearsal last week, i accidentally had the blues driver off and hit the plumes to go into a big chorus. "woah that's too loud!" i thought. but the other guys loved it and want me to do it again. i am not one of these decibel-obsessed rock guitarists i am a pragmatic musician with tinnitus.

i'm writing this because i am unable to go in and experiment with the setup until tomorrow but i am thinking that i will probably start running the amp a little colder and using the drives as two separate "a bit crunchy" voices where either one can boost the other as needed. i am truly loath to buy anymore overdrives (although i do sort of miss my WH chalky box). maybe a switcher to use both the channels separately. ANYWAY, whatever... gear thread... hope everyone is warm & fuzzy

I have been playing a guitar tuned to c# standard lately, and recently I’ve been really enjoying running various gain stages set relatively light into eachother in series. For reference, I’ve got a Fairfield Long Life (filter/eq) into a EQD Special Cranker set to minimum gain, into a Dreadbox Kinematic (compression/drive/filter) into a Chroma Console with heavy compression/drive.

There is something about how the low tuned guitar interacts with the gain stages, compression and filtering- I get these crazy resonant droney sounds that sort of “breathe” in and out with the compression- it’s like this crazy nuanced grainy dirty shit. I think I now understand bands like Sunn O))) who are experiencing a similar thing with extremely loud amps- there is a depth to the sound that I find really interesting, and the whole system is very reactive to changes.

Maybe what they liked was the change in dynamics? A clear dynamic shift is dramatic and it sounds like they reacted positively to it.

It doesn’t always have to be done with volume- clever EQ shifts can achieve the same thing. Plumes is a tubescreamer, right? Maybe you can use an EQ pedal like the trusty Boss to achieve a similar dynamic shift without the volume spike?

Have you found unity gain on the volume knob for all of your pedals? I get my amp as loud as I’ll be playing then set the volume knobs on all the pedals so none of them making me any louder or quieter than my clean. I retain the textures without increasing dynamics. I just play harder/softer and fuck with the volume knob when I need to.

this seems like the appropriate place to mention Gibson’s latest folly…are you ready for Murphy Lightly Aged Acoustics? what better thing to do than take preposterously overpriced acoustic guitars and apply ridiculously expensive faux aging techniques? i guess if you’re in the market for a J-200 what’s an extra couple of thousand bucks?

Tired: nitrocellulose lacquer is magic.
Wired: you need to break the nitro by making it check everywhere for the real tone to happen.
