Audacity works fine. I had to add some fun things in Ableton but that's also just the DAW I always use and it's definitely overkill.

Audacity is the simplest free one.

Ardour is the most powerful free one, but it is a pain in the ass even if you are well versed in DAWs.

Reaper has a free trial period that they never enforce, so you can kinda use it as long as you want.

Sorry dude! I tried to find the most natural spot to start when we synched phone calls, and that seemed like the best spot, but yeah, it comes in right at a peak (even after levelling everything out).
