my gf picked up the cheapest elec violin off ebay (one of the ones with no body, just wings, totally electric no acoustic) for noisy shenanigans and had no issues with feedback in the DIYest live settings.

Yeah I've considered electric but I'd rather use a viola than a downtuned violin (really can't be bothered with normal tuned violin) - I used to play violin and they're too small for me I think! I'm finding viola suits me more, and I want a darker tone for this music I'm doing. And it turns out electric violas are both rare and expensive, apparently.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions everyone. Dubkitty I did end up figuring out the "no feedback" spots yeah, that was helpful, just not so much when I also need to sing and the mic doesn't move  But yeah, is always good to have a go. Taping over the f holes seems like the no brainer thing to try if the problem persists. It's a cheap viola so I'm not that precious about it I'll just start with low tack tape in an attempt to not ruin it that much.

I bought a new pickup with a much better mount (KNA) and I'm pretty hopeful about that. A parametric EQ is a great idea too, I was considering getting one of those anyway for other reasons (sine effects one) so that could be a great application of it.

another underrated tremolo with great CHOPP is the Fender MTG Tube Tremolo. still with tap + no CV but it does sawtooth, sine, and square waves; the squarewave setting lets you adjust the duty cycle from brief mini-blips to barely-separated chunks. it’s a power hog (200 mA) but with sufficient power it adds a nice slightly funky tone color. it’s now the trem box on my Normie Board.

MTG does look pretty cool. I get bugged by the alt function controls on the sonar sometimes so I may check it out. A lot bigger but I can probably deal with that.

i’m pissed. i tried to order the Paranormal Esquire Deluxe from the Fender website. they wouldn’t let me do PayPal Pay In 4 and i didn’t want to do another Affirm thing so i tried going through Klarna. it was a big pain in the ass to set up and when i was done there it failed to connect back to the transaction on Fender so i could complete the purchase. i thought maybe they’d refused the 12-month plan so i tried again with Klarna pay in 4. this also failed to connect back to the transaction. so i have no active orders on Fender, but when i looked at Klarna i have two active loans. WTF? so i tried calling FMIC and got a message for 5 hours that all employees were in a scheduled meeting and to call back in 2 hours. i tried chatting with Klarna and they said i should talk to Fender first. which i can’t do. at this point i don’t even want the fucking thing any more. i guess if i can’t reach anyone at Fender tomorrow i’ll cancel them both through Klarna. and i was having a decent day up until then.

got Klarna to cancel the loans. i won’t try again. this clearly is the universe guiding me away. in retrospect a guitar with a Huge Bright Bucker with coil splitting as its only voice is kind of outside of my use case. i don’t play that big, you know? i will never order from Fender.com again.

Got in on the new batch of Dead Air's Chaos Drives. Also have a s/h Wound incoming. So looks like a Dead Air christmas.

My Hizumitas is pretty close to my platonic ideal of a muff, but have been wanting to try something more russian/civil war flavoured, as the hizumitas has this scuzziness to the high end that I adore, but have come to realise is a bit of a theme across all my current dirt, looking for a bit more contrast when i kick that on.

Concertina! I bought a cheap one on a whim about two years ago, then SO got me good one for my birthday. The instrument is like the diametric opposite of guitar: it's extremely difficult to transpose (unless you're going up or down a fifth) and near-impossible to amplify, let alone to add effects. I like it because of its resistance to gearhead-type discussion. After you've got hold of one you like the only way to make it sound better is to build your chops. What a relief.

Im on the precipice of falling down the EVM speaker and Thiele cab rabbit hole...

Currently running my Quilter TB202 into an Fender combo amp cabinet (sans amp) loaded with a reconed JBL K120. I like that speaker a lot, but part of me can't help but wonder if I'd maybe like an EVM more. And maybe I'd like it in a Thiele 1x12 cab also :whateva:

I everything to love about an EV in a TL806 but the weight. Do it!

I have a 70's Plush tube amp that needs about $400 in work, according to the amp tech. I paid about $400 for it, 20 years ago. It never got much use, I liked other amps better. I don't think anyone would pay $400 for it now. It's tuck & roll and beat up cosmetically, if there was somebody out there who still wants tuck & roll. In car terms, it's totaled. Just getting it diagnosed will be a $50 bench fee.

What do you do in this situation?

I've got a Plush 1060S. it! :!!!:

If you don't want it, give it away. I'm sure there's someone who's willing to spend the money to get it running.

giving up on a project is not a sin. i threw out a bunch of Musima guitar parts because they were too beat to be useful or to make a whole-ass guitar out of. kept the hardware, but the bodies were unsalvageable without way more work than i wanted to do.

I'm into the phase of economic distress where I'm listing things for sale I bought and went "well, I'll never sell this, because it's worth more to keep!". Just listed my nice Dewalt tablesaw I haven't touched in 3 years, that I bought after checking out a cheap old saw from our local tool library 5+ times in a summer for DIY projects. I'm thinking about listing 2 of my custom made Dunwich pedal, but I genuinely don't know how much to list them for. They're one of a kind and fucking rip, but also I don't want to price gouge people and it's not like I can price check them on reverb. I'm at the point where I play so infrequently, I feel fine being pretty minimalist and just figuring out how to get the most amount out of the least gear.

Lately I've just been playing with my Boss BD-2 and GE-7 graphic EQ before it and I feel like I can coax most dirt tones I want/need out of that combo, with a little tinkering. I really like my MXR Carbon Copy for most delay needs these days. I feel a bit more picky about reverb, but don't feel like hauling the DIY made Surfy Bear spring tank up from my basement most days. I still have a bunch of modulation pedals deep in a box that I feel shame I never use, but I got them so cheap, it doesn't even feel worth selling them and maybe someday I too will gaze at shoes

goroth has been selling big chunks of his pedal collection on a swedish website.
What do we make of this?
I for one am not ready to call it treason, but I have shed a few tears reminiscing about the era of huge Dr Sci boards...
