The phrase is basically a sportswriter storytelling conceit--little STAR ATHLETE A grew up in BAD NEIGHBORHOOD B, but instead of DOING BAD THINGS (s)he concentrated on SPORT C instead.
In my mind, it's when something goes beyond being a hobby to being a lifestyle thing. So, extending this out, I'm a snowboarder--not someone who snowboards. You know?
And yes, music is one of those things, except that for me music is always collaborative, and I need to find a warm weather solo adventure shit.

Gotcha. Thanks man!
Warm weather solo shit: backdoor porch banjo playing? Polo? LARP?
Nah seriously. Mountainbike riding. Sooo good. Sucks that I moved to one of the flattest parts of Sweden...

I figure there can't be much team spirit when a bunch of upper class twits are riding on horses chasing a small ball.

I think it goes off of your grandpa on your mom's side
I've heard that. But that's also the ONLY time I've EVER heard of a specific gene being determined by a specific relation.
So I'm calling BS on that.
I mean if every gene was specifically tied to a specific relation we'd know exactly who had what before they were born rather than what they might possibly have later down the line.
I only did a bit of biology at school, but i know where the mataernal grandfather thing comes from. Its cause of the XY chromasomes men have. uUh... i think. Cause its the sperm that provide the X or Y chromasome and the mother can only provide X. These chromasomes, while determining gender, pass on sexual traits, things dictated by sex hormones. However, the Y chromasome is much smaller than the X, and can only carry the basic information needed for gender. So, the X chromasomes in a male , XY, all come from the mother.
So all your body hair and stuff is dictated by maternal genes, and i imagine the male portion of that comes at least mostly from your maternal garndfather.
Here, have a more in depth, probably better genetics article on it

Interestingly, my younger brother (and my dad, and uncle cousins etc.) can't grow facial hair to save their lives. I'm the only one with a beard--which follows, as my maternal grandfather was a Welsh dude. from Wales.
Which explains why I like to get... woaded.

I come from a long line of bald men.
Actually that mother's side granddad does not seem to hold true in my family. Both of my half-brothers and me have the exact same type of hair loss like our dad and his brother. My mothers dad was not nearly as bald as the lot of us.

I feel I'm probably not going to lose my hair.
It's so thick it would probably take a decade to fall out anyway. My grandfathers hair is also glorious for an old man.
Hair.
I think if you are losing your hair, it's a license to spot the manliest beard ever. That's what I want to do. If I lose my hair, I'm growing my beard to my freaking knees.
