Yes - maybe not quite as youthfully "inspired" but still plenty enjoyable in a similar mode

re: Black Midi - I think I like the idea of them more than I like them in particular right now. I mean, I like that there are new groups that want to play with elements of "proggishness" while keeping their other influences intact. Don't really need any more Yes/Genesis/KC clones, but it's refreshing to hear stuff labeled, by some at least, as prog that isn't more properly labeled prog-metal. Cocktail up yer prog with all the other genres, too, young lions!

Agreed, most of what is labeled as prog-metal in the last years all sounds like the same band, with those horrible super clear "plastic" sounds, brrrr..

everytime I go to post something by these guys I end up holding off, because I can't decide whether to post them here or in the jazz thread. I suppose, like some other things I post, the answer might be: neither. but the general listening thread seems even more of a stretch, and this album was their most song-orineted, so seems a bit more RIO/proggy. I think fans of Henry Cow's mellower side might like this cut (though they are generally a tad more raucous).

Totally didn't knew that! maybe i read about it somewhere, but i find it hard even to remember things like backing bands/year/etc about the albums i play since forever (except for the music) Totally cool, i have to admit i started to appreciate Firth only in the last year, thanks for the headsup.

So, i came back to Black Midi again, and listened with more attention...but..meh
i don't dislike them at all, it's just that i don't see all of this freshness everyone's talking about, they remind me a lot of early math/noise scene (Touch and Go bands). I mean, they're enjoyable but nothing new under the sun. They surely have some catchy riffs, and the drummer keeps everything interesting, but i don't like the voice of the main singer, which is a major downside for me.
