Since you seem to be the resident vegetarian health nut, got any good high-calorie vegetarian recipes? I know I should eat more beans and such as an alternate protein source but the only thing I know how to make with beans is rice and beans and I hate rice and beans.

For straight calories, I'd have to say olive oil, avocado oil, and nut oils like walnut and almond. Walnuts are high in Omega 3s which are good for a myriad of things. Add it to stuff or just take a tablespoon a couple-few times a day. I'm still trying to put on some size, and without eating my weight in carbs and getting all bloat-o-tron, so healthy fats are the way to go. You can also use coconut milk (the canned type, not the drinking type), coconut oil, and coconut butter. If you can consume dairy products (which I can't.....) add a tablespoon of butter to your meals. Do some research if your family has a history of high cholesterol, but for the large part there are a lot of myths about fats being bad for you. Trans-fats ARE bad, but saturated fats are not necessarily bad. Your heart uses fatty acids for energy.

As to that study, I'd like to see the demographics of the test subjects, as well as their lifestyles. It claims that

"These numbers can be considered statistically neutral, that is, free from those observed during the variables such as age, body mass index, physical activity and family history of cardiovascular disease and cancer. It is also important that all the observed members of the group were physically healthy at the start of the study"

but doesn't back up that statement with any facts or data. Why can those numbers be considered "statistically neutral?" I don't see how that's possible. Over the course of a study that long there are a LOT of variables to take into account.

Anywho, without derailing the thread.... I ran my long route today for the first time in months...about 6.5 miles. Felt nice. I'm going to be doing some extra running because one of my elbows is fucked up and I can't really do any resistance training with it. :grumpy:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22412075 here's some more data I found just now about that study.

tl;dr:
CONCLUSIONS:
Red meat consumption is associated with an increased risk of total, CVD, and cancer mortality. Substitution of other healthy protein sources for red meat is associated with a lower mortality risk.

Here's a more accurate picture of "high" protein foods.

I've seen a bunch of those photos that alexa posted, listing all those as high protein foods. They may have a high percentage per volume, but a handful of nuts vs a palm-sized piece of chicken might tell differently. It's also important (especially for more physically active people) to note that you need complete sources of protein, and those are slightly scarcer in the vegetable world. Although a lot of the things listed are good examples, actually: hemp, quinoa, etc...

Now, before we erupt into a debate (and I know you guys are nice, gentlemanly debaters; Iv'e had a few good ones here) let me state that I have nothing against vegan or vegetarianism. In fact , I'd consider it, if I weren't already allergic to dairy and gluten-free. Plus, I avoid soy as much as is reasonably possible. That shit's too hard to digest, etc.... I know tempeh and miso are alright, though.

My bottom line is that when one diet works for one person, for their specific goals, it might not work for someone else with different genetics, a different digestive system and different goals. I do take into account that meat takes an exponentially greater amount of resources to bring to your table then veggies. As a rule, I try to be conscious of how much I'm eating and where I'm getting it from.

inexpensive high tops. I've got a friend who's got 40% off Nikes, so I'll probably go that route.

Although ten year old me is totally ready to splurge on the Reebok Answer IV reissues.

Think we are playing wednesday and I may try the Air Hoop Structure again (they feel really stiff but I have only worn them for one night of ball so they need some break in)

so I am trying to flip over my running schedule, running in the early AM instead of late at night
man it sucks
anyone got any tips
today everything just hurt
my problem has always been flexibility and by the end of the day I feel loose enough to move like less of an old man
AM is needed because I keep almost getting hit by jerks in cars and because it will make more sense as weather gets bad

Stop running, because it sucks.

Stretches depend on what you're trying to stretch. I have really tight hamstrings, so I do a pair of stretches on those at least once a day--in the AM, and before/after the mostly-daily shooting around/low-key park hoops.

I stretched but I don't know that I was awake enough to be running yet
I felt like my legs were tight and my back was loose (if that makes sense)
and running does suck alot: but I also feel like I am doing something positive with my time and it gives me a chance to clear my head.
