I plugged this sucker into the overdrive channel of my L11 the other day. Holy Guacamole!! It lit up that amp like nobodies business. All the grind and harmonic overtones one could only wish for otherwise.

been on a bit of a modding craze lately...

- added a power jack to my beloved 05 (one of the first pedals i ever bought), then added a power starve knob as well
to simulate the dying battery that i had gotten so used to but didn't realize until now

- swapped a bunch of components & the opamp in this MXR Distortion III for more bass, more highs and more gain.
also installed a toggle switch for different clipping diode options. stock - none - red & yellow led for a lil asymmetrical action
swapped the bypass LED as well w/ a slow fade RGB just for fun
really digging the LED clipping. shit rips now esp w/ the 05 running into it.

- built a standalone dying battery simulator to test other things out.
its really simple build but this one had a lot of sentimental value to me.
was the first thing i tried to build maybe about ~10 years ago when i tried and failed miserably at soldering/circuit bending.
(spoiler - it did not work at all)
piece of cake for me now, helped me realize how far i've come in a short few years since i've tried my hand at soldering again.
having the right tools at hand is M-A-J-O-R

- modded my holiest grail (holy shit did i forget how amazing this thing sounds)
swapped the old footswitches w/ new soft touch ones
added a regular 2.1mm (boss style) center negative power jack so no more special 2.5mm center positive jack needed.
nice to be able to daisy chain it now no hassles. (really dislike extra power supplies/adapters n shit)

- finally swapped the extra extra bright ultra blinding LEDs for some mellow-er ones in this space time continuum delay that i absolutely love
had to swap the CLRs to 10k and put some diffused LEDs in there. so much better for my eyes now (previously just put some duct tape over them to mellow them out)

Sick I love stand alone power sag too man, it makes a lot of stuff really come alive or .. be more usable I guess. I put starve in quite a few things I've cloned that didn't originally have it too.

thanks man! yea the power sag in the 05 is really nice esp since its stock only one knob. opens up a lot of dimension on the pedal. not as good on the ND i tried it w/ kinda just lowered the volume.
i like how u get it in a sweet spot and the LED on the pedal starts to flicker to the sound of your playing.

also at the same time made me sad that all the new stuff is SMD, and its gunna be harder/next to impossible for the newer generations to learn w/ and get down on the modding fun.

most of the time i just do it b/c i always learn something in the process & its good practice.

I'm still in my first year of building and didn't try that sort of stuff yet ... I do have a Deadend PCB around though, that I always push down the list, going "I'll do another simple fuzz, before I feel ready to tackle that".
Maybe it's time now.

I've just finished this one, a PCB from Fuzzdog. They say it "fits into a crack in the tone wall right between the FY2 and the Super Fuzz."
They also talk about "face-off gain", that this doesn't seem to have Anyway, if I dime the Volume and put intensity around noon my bass roars big time!

First time I drilled an enclosure myself, good thing I didn't use PCB mounted pots
I like to dress up my boxes ...

i'd be lying if i said I wasn't hesitant many times. but in the end i just went for it b/c fuck it only one way to find out if u can do it.
did i always succeed right away? hell no, but then i learned a lot about potential pitfalls and things to be more careful w/
as well as figuring out what went wrong and hopefully how to fix it. both are invaluable lessons to be constantly learning.
certain things u will really only be able to learn when things go wrong.

i've been drilling my own enclosures w/ board mounted pots and stuff since i started.
i just use photoshop and make simple little drill templates. once u get your sizes for the different boxes and parts its super easy to mix and match and create new ones.
haven't had any problems with stuff not fitting yet *knocks on wood*

i think if u drill your holes just a tad bigger it gives u a lil wiggle room as well

Metric step bit from eBay. You'll never regret it. Nice pedal dude.

Also, plot your drills with a spring loaded punch so you run into less instance of wander while drilling holes.

Love this thread, lot's of cool stuff.. Hopefully I'll wind up building something for myself soon so I can participate, hahaha.

Having done a handful of fuzzdog builds, i'd say you might have the board upside down, meaning the pots are probably wired backwards i think? I'm ready to be mistaken but... worth checking.

Typically the written side is opposite the pots on boards I have bought. And typically the "1" pot lug hole is square, when designers are friendly . The #1 lug is the far left when you set the pot on a table and face the lugs towards you. Also, you could probably use a little more solder if the pad isn't getting it through on the front side .. just a suggestion.

As for the pots: this PCB didn't have number on any of the lug holes - nor a square for that matter. I assumed that lug 1 is on the right on the pcb, for INT and VOL, judging by the pots used in the kit (I just got the pcb) and my limited ability to read schematics. So, the wires go straight or parallel to the pot lug.
Wouldn't wiring backwards mean that the volume goes down while turning up the volume pot?
Anyway, it will double check.

Yes, the operation would most likely be either backwards or the pot would be loud AF at all times.

Yeah, wired pots - security measure as I drilled myself, ha-ha.

Anyway, should be good, as the pots behave as expected.

I might put something else into Q1 one though, maybe MPSA18 (?), to see if that gets a tad more gain. BOM said 2N5089, which I didn't have, so I went with 2N5088.
