When's the last time you watched the first Matrix? I loved it when it came out but when I went back to it after a while it felt more like a bad comedy than anything, like watching Scary Movie. Must be because I'm getting old, a lot of movies I loved years ago do nothing for me now.

that's why i will NOT watch RoboCop.
i still watch it once a year or so. the outfits are silly but i dig huge verbose ideas, even if they're silly ideas.
i can't stop myself from screaming, "WHY NOT FUCKING COWS??!? MORE HEAT, LESS BRAIN, NO MATRIX YOU FUCKS. WHY NOT COWWWWWWWWWS???!?" everytime they explain the Human Coppertop thing though.

The Matrix does feel like a comedy these days. When it first came out it was so badass and innovative that it influenced the next generations movies for 5-6 years afterwards more than any other movie of its time. But were used to it now and the style and falir that it had is all fizzled out.
I spent new years day watching them again though.

RoboCop was GOOD, I bet it's still good, will have to steal the DVD from someone and confirm. Verhoeven's stuff tends to hold up well enough.

Haki wrote:Originals I watched back in the 90s, they seemed OLD then. I'm with your wife. They just bored me, the most interesting character was that bleeping trashcan on wheels. I enjoyed watching the new ones more than the old ones, but that's because I watched those with an OG junky that kept getting pissed off every other second about how they were ruining everything.
Anyone else find it odd how quickly and voraciously Behnds goes to defend his old sci fi......and totally skips over that Haki was with his wife....? But I bet if she would have said, 20 minutes into Serenity, that it was boring....you'd be kicking her ass to the curb, anyways.
But yeah, Star Wars was from the 70's.....I mean....just look at other movies from the 70's and those special effects are just amazing. A lot of that model stuff is still 10X better than the CGI shit that get thrown out nowadays.
But it probably loses a lot of its appeal in that there are no surprises. When I saw them for the first time (I'm a '83er) it was already understood Vader was the father and Luke and Leia were siblings. That's a huge shocker that wasn't shocking. So when a younger person sees it....the plot isn't AS good as it could be.
Holy balls the newer ones suck ass. Grand Admiral Thrawn could remedy this (I think we talked about that quite a few pages back).
Robocop was still a'ight. Howard the Motherfucking Duck was the one that I loved as a kid but couldn't get through as an adult. Krull is the one I don't want to try my luck on. I started watching Seaquest on Netflix, last week.

Let's face it! Star Wars (original trilogy) is super bad ass if you were a kid when it came out. I watched A New Hope almost everyday when I was 5 and 6, having taped it off of Showtime on the VCR. Before real cable when Showtime was a accessable by sliding some control hooked into the back of the TV. I saw my first Bewbs as a lad on showtime, anyways. The Empire Strikes Back is epic and dark, my favorite of the Trilogy these days. I did see Return of the Jedi in the Theatre (when I was 5), I loved it and the ewoks. Now I don't love the ewoks but they are bareable, and so much better than Jar Jar.
Star Wars is a huge part of the Mythology of my youth. Lucas really thought out archetypes and made a universe that was believable. The effects were groundbreaking.

that's why we..... we don't watch Firefly or Serenity together. intellectually i understand that a lot of the charm is the verbal wordplay and that's going to be HARD grab for a non native English speaker. The Wife speaks English fine (WAYYYYYYYYYYyyy better than my crappy Japanese), but that's asking a lot. but yeah. it might be a fight. so.... avoidance GOOD.
