Re: I want a Science Amplifier
First of all, hello everyone! I joined, like several others, specifically because of this particular thread. I've been searching for an amp or two to round out my modest collection. I've gone through some Orange, Mesa, Fender and other heads but I never really quite found what I was after.
I love my Vox AC30HWHD, but it's not loud enough to keep really clean with a drummer; for certain kinds of music, at least. I had a Reeves Custom 18 that was magnificent sounding, but was pretty limited in both what it could really do and the wattage/headroom. I have thought long and hard about another Reeves. I discovered Science on my buddy's recommendation (user insubordination on here - thanks!), and after scouring a couple of forums (especially this thread) I have settled on Science being my new loud amp of choice.
I've been talking to Alex from Science at length about my preferred sounds and bands that generate tones I'm fond of. He has been completely helpful and responsive to all of my inquiries. I can't remember the last time someone spent so much time communicating so politely and attentively in this kind of a scenario.
I've been torn between the Hellhawk and the Decolonizer. I've been selling off a variety of gear and decided to do something crazy: I bought the Hellhawk on Reverb (eek!) AND I'm going to go ahead and place an order for a Decolonizer. I can't remember the last time I was so excited about a piece of gear. Apparently the Hellhawk I bought was owned by Pswingset and used with P90 guitars to record the album(s) that has been floating around forums as a sound example. Nifty!
I've been really impressed with this forum and the civility and generally intelligent discourse in the threads I've been scouring. There's a lot of great information here. Cheers!

Re: I want a Science Amplifier
I recently bought the Science Amps Mother for sale in the forums from member bronzetalon, and let me tell you, it's the real deal. I hadn't heard of Science Amps before, but have owned both reissue and vintage Hiwatt DR201's over the years, which have been my favorite bass amps. I reached out to Alex with some questions, and although I went the used route (I was upfront about it), he was super helpful and informative and obviously loves his craft.
Fast forward to getting the amp - it is unbelievable. Hands down my favorite amp ever. The clean channel nails the classic Hiwatt KT88 tone with more control via the Depth knob and the overdrive channel is awesome - it's easy to add just a bit of hair, although full bore sounds pretty damn good as well. Over the years the only frustration I had with my Hiwatt's was that they were just a touch too trebly at times and it was hard to coax warmer tones at lower volumes. Not a problem with the Mother. The pic is from the FS post - it just happens to be the color combo that I would have chosen anyway - an extra bonus!

Make sure you post pics and stuff! I need my Science gas to go away or culminate in an amp soon. It's been at a dangerously irresponsible level for a long time now. Other purchases make it now fully unnecessary, but the gas persists...

Re: I want a Science Amplifier

Just got Holy Schnike's Shiv in today, got to spend a little less than an hour with it before my son started to get fussy from JAMMING TOO DAMN HARD.
I love the two channel set up. Channel A gets that slight dynamic breakup that I LOVE and have been using my Fuck to achieve, now I can just use that channel
Channel B is nothing but
The 3 way voicing switch is great, and covers a lot of ground/sounds. Voice 1 is well rounded, full range. Voice 2 has a mid shift upward, increases the gain a bit and I can tell it will stand out really well in a band mix. And then Voice 3 is low end boost, which when combined with either channel can get you some really, really thick tones.
With the Absence control at zero, bright chime galore, I love it. Total noise rock thrashy clank with the EGC's. Hitting channel 2 and increasing the absence control to roll off some of the fizz gets you a tight distortion that you can totally chug with.
The quality of the amp itself is ridiculously awesome. Probably one of the best and well put together pieces of amplifier gear that I have put my hands on and played, let alone owned. Everything is just so tight in the craft, well thought out, sturdy, and built to last.
I'll post some more thoughts and hopefully some clips as soon as I can
