And loving it.

So I think my shopping list is about a 100% ready.
Starting the shopping tonight on the interwebs, rest this week end. I'll wait out of the candy and stuff to be sure it's still perfect when it gets to my poor victim.
Debating on getting the pedal right now. I know what I'm gonna go with but I'm afraid little satanee might buy it for himself though. TORN SO TORN I AM.

Ok so serious question for you international folks. I'm not going to say who I have but they are international. I've spent enough money that I don't feel comfortable shipping it without doing it with insurance. In order to do that, I HAVE to declare a higher value or else they will not let you insure it.
So how much could my SS be looking at spending in customs? God other countries are assholes about this shit. Ugh.

Custom fees and VAT is harmonized within the European Union. Your Satanee is looking at 20% of total price including shipping for taxes, and a 1 or 2% more for fees if the transporter collecting VAT isn't the national Post service. It's gonna be roughly the same for Norwegians and such that are not in the EU.
Don't get too cranky, this is how we afford schools and national health care.
Your options are to clearly declare it as a gift, gift wrapping everything and hoping that the customs agent that controls it feels "christmasy".

Hmmm...well that sucks. 20% is high as hell. Is it just like that in European countries??? I don't really know because most times I obviously just gift. But one gift I bought was really special and still on it's way from overseas and I don't want it getting ruined.

How often do international people get hit with customs? I've only had to pay fees once (and that was from MWFX, who everyone has to pay fees from for some reason), but I've never had anyone else international pay fees from something I shipped.

If it arrives in december and looks like a christmas gift, customs will probably let it through. And if not, you'd have a case against them, since legit gifts are supposed to be fee free. So your victim just needs to prove somehow that it's a gift, possibly put up a fight and stick it to the man, and then get his or her money back. But honestly, it should be fine.

Setting the minimum VAT rates is an European Union competency. Standard VAT is 20% everywhere in the EU. Different rates exist for certain goods that are considered special: 2,1% for meds, 7% for first necessity goods like dry pasta and such...

^What he said except that in the EU gifts are only duty free if the value (shipping not included) of the goods is inferior to 45 euros (EU directive n°2006/79).
For example:
If you send a CD declared at 10 euros, a scarf declared at 20, a pack of biscuit declared at 6 euros, a book declared at 10 euros and a pedal declared at 200 euros. That's 10 + 10 + 20 + 6 + 200 = 246€.
Both the 10€ items and the 20€ (total 40) items will be duty free. Value can't be fractioned, that means the 6€ and 200€ will be taxed in full. If shipping was 20€; taxable total is 226€. That's 45,20€ in tax, plus maybe 5 or 6 for the private transporter.
(Shipping could have recently been switched to duty free for genuine free market reasons, but I'm not sure it's yet applicable.)
