Being a (non-racist) skinhead is one of those things where I respect your efforts in trying to reclaim it but so many assholes have ruined it that you can't be pissed when someone confronts you with the baggage. Sure it's not your fault people have dragged it through the mud but you're going to have much better luck making people understand your side by being an ambassador and not attacking folks who don't know there ever even WERE skinheads that aren't neonazis.
Which is the only type of skinhead I've ever dealt with, but then I'm in Texas.

In high school, I wanted to be a skinhead. I loved ska, hated racism, and hung out with a guy who joined the SHARPS. I was getting all ready to ask him to put me on the team. One day, he's talking about a guy who had just recently joined up with his crew. He and a couple other SHARPs went over to the dude's house and jumped him into the gang. "And when we were done with him, he was all layin' there in his own mother's doorway..." I was like "Cool, if you need me I'll be over here growing my hair out." I lost touch with him, but heard he grew up to be a total racist.

In my younger years, I occasionally got mistaken for what people would call a skinhead because I did shave my head (for embarrassing dermatological reasons) and would wear suspenders/braces (I'm an American, so they are suspenders to me and I'm not going to affect a Brit-ism) because I was more active and basically didn't have hips.

It was weird because I'm a non-joiner in terms of wanting to be a this or that...even in my younger years when people are sort of looking for their identity and guideposts help.

Every once in a while, there would be some physicality because I was "fooking skinhed" when really I was just a bald guy trying to keep my pants up

probably easier now that bald is "a look"
