Also interested. I think from our conversation the Hellhawk and I are lovers, but I could get down on something else for sure.

At least a brief idea or description?

I've been torn between a Hellhawk and a Mother for a while.
I feel a Hellhawk with a Mother power amp would be perfect...a Hell Mother :idk:
Any plans to make something like that happen?

Mayhaps I need to save some $ to add another Science to the lineup :thumb:
Happy to! Thanks for the interest everyone. One idea I've wanted to do for a long time is a really simple two channel amp. Just gain, treble, middle, bass, master for each channel. No FX loop (perhaps as an option), pull switches, toggles, boosts, etc. I want it to feel like two dead simple single channel amps in one (so I can finally convert all those single channel worshipers). It will be my idea of a perfect clean and perfect overdrive. The other idea is keep the cost down by cutting out the bells and whistles (which most of you have in the form of pedal boards anyway!). I really do love utilitarian amps, and I think this would be most focused manifestation of that. Haha, sorry if that sounds dull, but I really cannot find another amp like this, and it's the one I used to want myself, but never built!

Next one is a single channel highly tweakable amp for the heavy shredders. No clean channel, just wide range gain control, and plenty of EQ shaping. It always makes me sad when people buy 2 channel amps and never use the clean channel. Now I won't have to be sad anymore.

I did once work on a 200W Sound City that had its preamp converted to Plexi specs, and that thing killed the Model T. That said, people seem to shy away from the 200W, at least for guitar. I have considered doing a half power Mother, but I'd like to do new amps that don't step on each other's turf. It keeps it really fun for me, and helps me attract guitarists who play all types of music, which is cool. I always have a million ideas, however, and anything's possible so I'm open to suggestions!

Hellhawk with Super Bass specs and Mercury 150w ultralinear model T transformers: Model Hell. I'll take it and put my deposit down when you're ready for it :thumb: :hello:

(That's basically a Model T clone :yay: )

These words are motivating. I've been meaning to rebuild the pre (and maybe power too) amp section of my Sound City 100. Was thinking of a Matamp preamp section. You've got me all twisted, Alex! So many options!

Anyways, back to more Science Amps talk.

Haha, maybe I should just do ALLisNOISE's idea afterall. Unfortunately something like that would probably be in the $2,500.00 range (there is a reason I kept the Mother single channel). I am trying to desperately to keep these things "affordable!"

200w is a tough sell for guitarists. I mean, many of us here would show interest, but I do see how it can limit the clientele. I feel like we keep coming back to 150w

Yeah, you don't see a lot of 150W amps, and there are a few reasons for that. To obtain 150W you'd need either six 6L6 or EL34 tubes run at 'typical' voltages, 4 KT88/6550 in ultra-linear configuration, or 4 KT88/6550 run conservatively with a high plate voltage and low screen voltage (a la Hiwatt DR201, and others).

The reason you don't see the first is because the two extra power tubes, extra wiring, and chassis space needed isn't really worth the extra 50W (which is only 1.5dB increase in volume) to most manufactures and players (although it is to you!).

The reason you don't see the UL setup (as found int he Model T) is because it is pretty hard on modern tubes, especially when the power tubes are pushed. Ultra-linear also has a bad rap with many guitarists, which I won't get into...

Lastly, you don't see 150W from the last setup, because you can just as easily extract 200W with good reliability. Basically, why waste 50W?

All these reasons are coupled with the need for custom transformers and of course the overall trend towards smaller amps. I'm sure there are more reasons I missed!

Happy New Year!

Hey, well that doesn't mean I won't do it some time! Just wanted to give my thoughts on why you don't see 150 watters more often.

...And since it's New Year's, just wanted to give a big thanks to ILF for all the support in 2014. I'll try to check into this thread more often to answer questions!

That simple/perfect two channel amp sounds amazing. I'm getting a big chunk of change in a couple months and have been thinking one of your amps should be part of it. Can't wait to see how this amp comes together!

That's exactly what I'd like to see!

I could even do without the second channel, but maybe he'll convince me successfully.
