i always call carbonated drinks "soda"; i'm don't remember if this is a Chicagoism or a localism i picked up after i moved to California. cannabis can be "dope," "weed," "pot," or "marijuana" depending on whether i'm speaking or writing, and how a particular word works in a phrase...e.g. i'm liable to finish the phrase "smoke some..." with the word "dope" because "smoke" and "dope" share that long "o" sound.

i find the ways that colloquial language changes as you move around the US absolutely fascinating. if there were any way to make a living at it, one of my dream jobs would be researching that stuff.

Also, pot sounds kind of old-personish to me, kinda like grass. I still say it occasionally, but I prefer weed. On a rare occasion I'll call it trees.

How does ILF feel about the word dope? I've always thought it was a massive faux pas to call marijuana 'dope.' To me, dope is heroin. It seems like a good way to separate people who've smoked weed in their lifetime or others who are oblivious. I've never done heroin or been around any junkies(no intention) so I'm not sure if they even use the term dope. Scag sounds so much cooler. Especially when it's in relation to someone named Savage Henry.

Yeah, it isn't "dope". I'm surprised when I hear "pot" instead of "marijuana" on the news, though I prefer "weed".
