I was on some kind of shopping spree and bought a set of Artec P90s for my Casino to replace the super hot 12k stock pickups with more reasonable 7.5k ones. And...

I bought this Harmony Batwing mandolin:

People on the internet seem to like how they look but not their sound. They are often described as dead and dull. I don't know. I had a very bright and loud mandolin once and it was - well, too loud and too bright for my taste. I hope for a mellow and relatively silent instrument with of course awesome looks. In this video here, it sounds very nice to me: https://youtu.be/yehVmu4An7E?si=lSJSuTdOmXdkILkJ
Wish me luck. I fear it would not be easy to sell it on, given the bad reputation of the model.

I’d pretty quickly found a standalone website for mods for the OG with a web search, but since that isn’t flying I would suggest putting out a feeler at the Modwiggler forums—some crazy mad scientist mojo there that might have looked at this machine as a golden opportunity between its interface and sequencer and its analog drum sound circuitry. If you ask there, I’ll be following the thread.

(Still good stock, though. Getting used to the sequencer workflow enough that I might now have a better idea of how to use the Pocket Operator Sample that has been languishing under my ignorance, though they really should have done that manual with black lettering, not grayscale.)
Good idea, thanks! I suppose I could just send the snare output to a pitch shifter or something, or pitch it in post. I think it's great stock too, pitch for snare is the only thing I would change about it.

Hell yea dude, Alec is a fucking genius. Mask rules. How are you liking it? It sounds absolutely punishing in all the demos I've seen.

The collapse of western society has really spurred me into getting my rig correct before pedal prices get stupid, so recent gets have been rounding out the rig further:

NuX Tape Core: I was in the market for a stereo delay that would take up less board space than my DL4, and ended up in Oakland Guitars to see if Johnny had one of those smaller boss space echo jawns they put out a few months back. Ended up trying the Tape Core on John Johns recommendation and it fucking kicks ass.
Its feels pretty sturdy, about the same as a typical Boss pedal so I'm not worried about breaking it. There is software NuX has for it that lets you editing things like how degraded the "tape" is and such, but it sounds great as it is. Haven't dived into that too much yet, but I'll experiment when I have the chance. So far tho, sounds awesome. Exactly the sort of psych rock, Thee Oh Sees ass, washy delay that I've been looking for. It also has a switch on the front that locks in your settings once you have it dialed in, which is great if you have big dumb feet like mine that kick the shit outta everything. :animal: Def can recommend it if your looking for a space echo option without having to spend crazy money. Sleeper hit.

Eventide x Third Man Hardware Knife Drop (Yellow Version): Had my eye ( ) on this since it was first announced. My mom ended up surprising me with it for Christmas, cause shes cool as fuck and has always been a big support of my music so, yay! Thanks mom.
The Synth sound is super cool if your trying to make single lines sound super big. It also weirdly nails the same sonic vibe as the synths Black Moth Super Rainbow uses for leads and such, so it was fun pretending to be Tobacco for a sec with that. I have it dialed in pretty conservatively at the moment. Just a little of the auto wah to make my pick attack hyper percussive + the octaves. Battles vibes. Kind of like a POG, but angrier. Its almost t o o fun really, I've been using it on a lot of new music. Its also so fucking brutal going into another distortion. The upper and sub octave modes into a black russian big muff damn near shook my fillings loose. Tracking is damn near perfect too.
Its definitely not for everyone, and it takes a little doing to dial it in. But its perfect for me. :snax:

MXR Rockman X100: First heard of the original unit cause of mk.gee. I was curious about using one cause I liked the sort of "queen" sound it gave guitars direct into a board, so I figured using it in tandem with some other preamp pedals on my board could be interesting. Then I saw how much the original units were going for and promptly moved on from the idea.
Then MXR announced the reissue and I ordered it immediately.
Really excited for it to get here. Plan is to run it on one of the clean settings as an always on "tone enhancer" type situation with my micro amp clone going into it. I really liked the "plinky" sort of attack the compressor circuit was giving the sound in demos, and I want to see how that would apply in my rig. Failing that, It'll ether be a really solid chorus pedal or possibly replace my q zone depending on how I'm feeling. We'll see! :excellent:

The good news is, it looks fucking sick and you can make it part of your sound no matter how it sounds. Reviews are bullshit, enjoy that weirdo little instrument!

I say this because I bought a 100+ year old tenor banjo last year despite the hate it got from the banjo internet world- and it sounds great to me, and I’m happy I got it.

So true! It was in the mail yesterday and after a bit of setup and maintenance it sounds and plays beautifully. It has a nice little midrange honk but at the same time sounds warm and indeed very pleasing. Like a built in natural saturation. In fact, this kind of sound it shares with a few old budget instruments I played or had, whereas more sophisticated instruments tend to sound more mid scooped, you know what I mean? Anyway, I'm glad I got it and it's not only a joy to look at but also to play it and hear it.
:joy:

It's in rather good shape, too, apart from a HUGE FUCKING HOLE IN THE TOP! Yes, someone drilled a 2cm hole under the pickguard to install a jack socket near the endpin. Luckily they didn't drill through any bracings. I might just make the best from it and wire the shadow bridge directly to a 6,3mm jack and skip the ugly preamp device it came with. I wonder if I should renegotiate the price as the hole wasn't mentioned in the add. Seller most probably didn't know, though.

I love it... I don't know what mojo spells Dave and Alec put inside the box but the Maybe The Real Treasure is absolutely INSANE & BERSERK!

I have a full sized Dunlop Crybaby 105Q coming… I tried to like the mini but I hates it… I don’t know maybe if my shoe size wasn’t in the 13-14 range….

This is for my fun jam board.. I’m going to run it parallel with my mutron iv and into a dod fx25 for extra funk.. :!!!:

just ordered a Roland M-120 12-channel rackmount line mixer off eBay. it has two effects loops and stereo panning. i plan to use this as the interface the synths and drum machines talk through, and if i ever take the looping thing live i can also run the board out into the mixer. $84.99 plus shipping.

in order to use this i’ll either have to pull stuff out of the 6-space rack i currently have, or get a smaller rack for mixer support. i’m leaning towards the latter simply because the Big Rack is a huge pain to move around. i’m also need to test the Rane stereo compressor in the old rack which i recall being much better at limiting than the stomp boxes i’ve tried. and though i haven’t used the reverbs in the rack in ages, i don’t want to put them further into mothballs than they already are. the mixer rack could also take the Rane parametric EQ which i expect would be much more useful in a full-range concept. the original rack was supposed to be for studio processing (well, living room processing anyway) and could still do that. if i use the current rack i’d probably take out the Yamaha SPX90 and the GEP50 that runs in its effects loop, but keep the Alesis MidiVerb II.

Dubkitty and his board reminded me of the existence of the SHSL, and after having brewed on it for a while I pulled the trigger last night. Going to swap out the filter cutoff knobs as they're not my fav look, but that's a quick fix. I've missed having a dedicated filter pedal and the filters were my fav part of the MS-20, so it should be a good time.

you wouldn’t believe how thick my lenses used to be before they invented high-index-of refraction materials. seriously, i once had a pair of glasses that were 1/4” thick. if my mom (RIP) was standing on the other side of the room and i didn’t have my specs on i wouldn’t recognize her unless she spoke.

I was recently in a similar position and went with the Fairfield long life- curious your thoughts on the shsl when you get it.
