So, I was relistening to some of Eloy's albums today. Listened to them in passing before and thought they were ok, but actually sitting down with their stuff I'm at a bit of a loss. Any strong opinions from the prog crew?

Don't know them enough, but the only thing I can say is that I stumbled upon some of their tracks during the years, but they naver made me want to dig deeper in their catalog.

Eloy are sometimes listenable, sometimes not. Their stuff varies. Overall, I'd say "I'd probably rather be listening to something else" though.
So, not really a strong opinion.

Yeah, that's what I ended up thinking as well. Some prog sites seem to rate them highly, which is why I assumed that they would be better.

Not all prog is created equal.

Plus, there are many different sub-genres of prog.
Not everybody wants to hear the same thing when they listen to prog.

There was a RMI electric harpsichord on my craigslist for $100 and I didn't know anything about it so I googled and it said the keyboards on this song is one of those. I should have bought it but didn't for some reason.

I don't really keyboard, but I played bass in a band that covered that song--it's fun to play. I always thought that Banks used one of the piano settings on the 386x for it (or maybe even it's predecessor, the Rocksichord). Word is that you could combine the basic piano/harpsichord/lute sounds--seems quite likely Banks could have been doing that. Definitely sounds like he's got the organ (sustain) setting turned on. Word also is that Banks had a Fender Blender built into his RMI--no evidence of that on Carpet Crawlers, but it's likely there somewhere else on Lamb...somewhere.... The keyboardist in my band just used a Rhodes and it still sounded great, but it probs could have used to be a bit more staccato on the note attack phase...come to think of it, he may have switched over to using his Prophet after a while....
There are a few virtual instruments and sample packs that claim to cop that sound through the years...but it would be fun to play an OG for stuff other than Banksian; the common notions of portability were of course far more generous than today

Although keyboardists apparently think little of the action on the RMI's keybed

That price though
Keith Jarrett would play an RMI when he was in Miles' band (if that's what was on stage when he got there, lol)[fusion invasion!

and Ron Mael of Sparks definitely featured it:

And, of course, there was the Caped One himself:
