Good god!!!! That's fantastic. I love the badge design on the cab, hadn't noticed that on other cabs.

I wonder if hes gonna go the route for all of his cabs or just his small ones. I like the badge lots though.

Prior to building my cab Alex mentioned that there would be a new logo on it, and the rest of the 2x12s I would assume, because the 4x12 logo was too big. I wasn't sure what it was going to be, but I figured it would be awesome, and it is. :!!!:

Long story short, it's hawt.

My patience being in the market for a first gen model T is wearing thin, and there happens to be a Hellhawk in the Seattle CL, which I'll be in two weeks. Hmmmmmm..... I wonder how the volume and headroom compare to that of a Model T. Anyone have experience with both? Love the tone of a Superbass but prefer the power of a Model T. Halp!?

Would depend on the wattage. The 1st gen Model T is much gainier than the 2nd gen but you can fix that by moving a single wire. I've not played a Hellhawk but its a Marshall style amp so you could probably get similar tones.

Not sure if this counts, but I've played both ;) The original Model T's, like the first Marshalls had a very similar preamp (almost identical) to the Fender Tweed Bassman (5F6A). Laney Supergroup was another. The difference with the Model T was its 150W (give or take) ultra-linear power amp and copious amount of negative feedback. The intent was to keep the power amp as clean as possible since the amp was originally designed for bass (Anecdote: The first tube amp my mentor ever noticed was actually Norm Sun(n)holm playing a Model T at his high school prom in Elma, WA!). Anyhow, the power tubes will break up eventually, however the master has to be nearly dimed. The master volume is also before the phase inverter tube and throttles the signal, so not much overdrive can be had at the phase inverter either until the master is cranked up. This 5F6A style preamp coupled with the big ultra linear power amp make these amps great loud and clean pedal platforms without being overly clean and sterile.

I often describe the Hellhawk as kind of a cross between a late 60's Superbass and Superlead (which again have a similar pre to the 5F6A). Depending on the which gain voicing you use, the Hellhawk can be darker like the Model T or Superbass, or biting and tighter like the Superlead. Unlike a lot of "4-holer" 60's/70's amps, both voicings sound balanced on their own, opposed to the typical "Mud" and "Ice-pick" channels which need to be blended to sound decent. The Hellhawk has more gain on tap, and can achieve it at lower volume due to the "Loudness" control, which is a master volume inside the power amp (rather than preceding it like in the Model T). Of course the Hellhawk is not as loud either, but it will still make you hurt. And this is kind of hard to describe, but the power amp is also more open sounding, so the amp is a bit more dynamic and "in your face." The Hellhawk doesn't break up right away, but it wants to. The Sunn, not so much, which is of course part of its charm when you make it. Hope that helps, and sorry for rambling!

...Oh, and that particular Hellhawk o CL is actually a little more in the Superbass vein per the customer's request, and has had a Slave/Level control, and Metro Zero-loss FX loop installed by me a while back. that loop has a switch, but is super transparent either way. I don't mind helping him sell it since he's trying to buy a Decolonizer :)

Thanks,

Alex

That was great reading, Alex. Ramble on all you want, I dig all that stuff. The reasons I've been keeping an eye out for a Model T are the reasons you posted, headroom and volume. The louder and more headroom the better (for me) while still staying in that Superbass/5F6A tone character when pushed. That's my main concern with the Hellhawk, that it won't be as loud or give me as much headroom as I desire. I have an old Traynor YBA-3 right now that is just shy of the volume I wish it could reach. So that's kind of saying a lot because those are pretty loud amps.

Anyways, my band is doing a NW weekend in two weeks, maybe I'll hit him up if he still has it for sale and I decide what I want to do. The way I see it though, if I'm spending that much on one of your amps used, I might as well get one new with whatever specs we work out, ya know? So hey, maybe you'll get an email instead of him

Totally. If you are really going for extreme headroom with the Tweed/JTM45 voice, then the Model T is the amp that does that. But yeah, you should give that Hellhawk a spin when you're in town if you can. The owner has a nice 4x12 he built with G12-65's.

No plans for any preamp pedals unfortunately. I must admit, I am strictly an amp-man ;) Just a couple other models in the works that I hope to release 2015 if I can find the time.

:yay: Care to elaborate?
Mayhaps I need to save some $ to add another Science to the lineup :thumb:
