Haha yeah that sounds cool. I think I want to get a second, possibly and have them in a double stand. So I'll wait till this comes out and see whether it looks more interesting to me than the dfamMrNovember wrote:I'm literally looking at all my gear right now trying to determine what I can sell to fund all three in a three-tier stand. No real interest for me
I would either want controller things in the rack or to be more complex, (i.e. more steps, screens and digital etc.)

Posted over in the modular thread too, but looks like Subharmonicon is definitely happening and I like what I am hearing:

I’m not sure what it’s going to take for me to buy one of their synths again... They make good stuff, so, I’m sad they target individuals the way they do. In order for me to want to buy their stuff again, I think they’d have to publicly apologize to Peter Kirn, offer to pay him damages for doing what they did, and start a humanitarian effort of some kind. Honestly, they might have to just restructure their executive team and rebrand as well in order for me to buy their stuff.MrNovember wrote:My thoughts exactlyInconuucl wrote:Fuck behringer
I’m sad because I really wanted to try out some of their upcoming wares (ARP 2600 clone). So, where I could never afford Korg’s clone and the parts kits are ridiculously overpriced, I’m just going to look into something else to get a complex monosynth sound.

Re: 2020 Happenings! (Video synths killed the tracker stars)
I've moved over to software recently, and it's been a fun time to transition. UVI released Drone, which is one of the coolest approaches to soundscapes I've seen. They sampled a lot of different textures for this---synths, bowed pianos, woodwinds, sound FX, et cetera. You can combine two layers + onboard effects for a fairly solid starting point. If you're interested in sound design/cinematic textures/evolving drones, it's a lot of fun. I got in on the introductory offer and I'm quite pleased.
Bear in mind that the UVI download process is kind of annoying. Because they use samples, their files are quite large. It will take about an hour or so to download their synths (Drone is 16 gigs). Then you have to authorize your license via iLok and UVI's Portal. You also have to import the soundbanks to the host device. It's a tedious undertaking, and even though I've been through it multiple times before, I always have to refamiliarize myself with the whole process.
I've barely scratched the surface, but feel like I'll use this on nearly every project I work on. For day one, I'm going Drone > Eventide's Crystals > Valhalla Supermassive (free) > Crystals
pros:
the presets are solid, so you can start experimenting immediately. nearly everything blends well with external FX.
you can do 5.1 mixes in Falcon (the UVI host program). the other UVI host option is Workstation, which allows for standard stereo mixes.
it's fairly intuitive and covers ground that other devices lack.
Workstation has the best arpeggiator I've ever seen (random, chord, bassline, spiral, and many more options beyond U/D). The velocity/swing options make it much more lively than other arps. I use it with their Korg 3200 emulator all the time and it's great for automating sounds, while I adjust the synth settings.
cons:
you can't import user samples (I don't miss them, because the editing is so deep on its own).
the download process is tedious.
UVI's preset system is a little annoying, but you get used to it.
it's fairly heavy on CPU, because of the stacked voices. you would need something with a fairly powerful processor to run 2 copies of Drone at once.

Eventide released Crystals (from the Pitchfactor & H3000 rack). It's $10 for your iPad or $39 for desktops ($99 will be the regular price).

I signed up for a free trial, even though I own a Pitchfactor. According to Eventide, the algorithms are the same, but they make slight tweaks to fit these better into a DAW environment. I'll probably grab this, just so I can have one on the computer.

This was announced a few days ago. It's a generative sequencer based on Euclidean principles. It's a bit pricey, hovering around $500, but if you want a compact MIDI tool for semi-random compositions, it might be just what you're looking for. For my wishes, this is fairly close to the ideal companion.

The Waldorf Iridium is supposed to be formally announced shortly. A product page was live, but it's been pulled. Hopefully that's not because Strymon had already released their own Iridium.
In short: 16-voice, bi-timbral operation at 1960 EU (pre-VAT)
Will this grab some people who weren't sold on the Quantum's hefty price tag?
