I think I have a game plan now...black paint with luminescent paint around some of the controls. Someone suggested the luminescent paints and sounds like a killer idea

dual blendable -1/+1 pitch shifters and resonant filter.

the 3-way toggle switches between 3 modes of resonance on the filter. none at all, moderate 2-pole resonance, a a whole lot 4-pole.

I kind of built this to try and replace my micropog. it does actual variable pitch shifting which the pog cannot do, which is great, also the resonant filter makes the bass sound really huge! but it does have that fluttery waving sound a lot of cheaper pitch shifters do (and I'm limited by the FV-1), that the pog does not. doesn't bother me hugely, but who knows maybe after a trial run I'll want to keep both.

The solder flux I use messes with the chip and/or that watch crystal, apparently. I had been using that flux for years on projects 'technically' more complex than this so it so I had never considered it to be a problem on my own. Somebody brought it up as a possible issue, and sure enough..

There was never anything wrong with the PCB (that one pictured is from the first batch, unmodified, that I thought didn't work). A big electronics cleaner bath did the trick.

So much time wasted and money wasted on test boards to try and find the issue, though.

Wow! What flux do I need to look out for? The one I've been using with the fv1 has never caused me any problems but I've never used any on the crystal

sparkfun discontinued it because it was deemed too hazardous. hmm.

I don't use flux on the crystal either, but using it on the chip was enough. even swabbing it afterwards with qtip and a bit of cleaner didn't fix it. It took literally a cleaner bath to fix..

It's still not super clear if it's just the crystal that's sensitive to this flux, or the FV-1, or both. But at least now it's working.

I had never heard of solder flux being an issue before. Awesome that you got it working, but bummer that it was something so inane.

We have had flux create all sorts for shorts on things,
Generally a bake out cycle does the trick but not always.

The issue for us is that it doesn't fully dissipate during soldering, and leaves a conductive residue.

A cleaning/bake out, usually fixes, but not on 3d printed or very porous materials.

Not sure that is the same issue you are experiencing, just my experience with wound coils.

Thanks man! Yeah, a lot of people really seem to like the synth enclosure. I actually posted on my FB page the other day that I plan to make a batch of those enclosures for DIY-ers if I can find 5 people that want one. It houses the parasit studio guitar synth circuit
