Also I've never really listened to Blud Aus Nord or Ulver before and those bands have been kicking my ass. I'm pretty sure The Work Which Transforms God is one of the gnarliest records out there.

I listen to twwtg like once a year. One of my all time favourite albums but it is just so relentless in its mood... It's just not very often I feel like that. But soooo good.

Ulver are all over the shop. By mostly they are geniuses.

yeah Blut Aus Nord is very bewildering and tiring at times but I really love them.

And the first Ulver record is pretty good and I don't super care about any of their other stuff.

I don't know if its the awful guitar tone or the erratic vocals, but this is really scratching my peste noire itch tonight. Also dude props for thinking up a new tolkein reference not taken by like ten other bands already!

Ulver is my favourite black metal band, gun to my head.

There are very few bands with a discography as expansive and diverse as theirs is.

Like, they've done black metal, medieval folk, '60s pop, orchestral chamber music, electronic... all with equal aplomb.

I also appreciate that they're a "collective" rather than a band... this almost always works out well.

Bergtatt is literally a perfect black metal album.

Fourth and final comment, Blut Aus Nord is sick. I don't know them well enough to like, debate the high points of their discography or anything, but I have Memoria Vetusta III: Saturnian Poetry and I love it.

Tolks -- arguably the biggest English language author of post-war Europe, so it's not really that surprising?

Also I still think Frost's playing on Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam is mindblowing even after a decade of listening to it.

I mean if he didn't invent High Fantasy as a genre, he made medieval legends and myths accessible enough to fill in the gaps.

I know its garm doing his james taylor thing and probably the most white people song ever, but if you don't get into ulver after hearing this there is no hope for your ears.
