Matched pairs are important. Amps are designed to require power tubes that have similar cathode current.

Even tubes of the same type that are made at the same time will have variations in cathode current, and this is why they test and match pairs.
Power tubes are paired up based on their current draw, or "plate current" (as those TOOB snobs refer to it)

I have noticed you've been doing a lot of murrrrrs, purrrrrrrrrs, meow's and squeegasms lately. Just pointing it out so I can say that I like it. It adds a little flavor. I try to write the way I speak on a speed binge: A lot of rapid fire tangents, semi-structured essays about something inconsequential.

Are my ears broken, or does the Ampeg SVT-III Pro just suck? I use it with a band (borrowed from one of the other members) and kind of hate it. Doesn't seem to take pedals well, sounds kind of flat even after a lot of time spent EQing. Maybe it's fucked up? Maybe I just prefer tubes?

I had a Blue Script SVT-3 PRO.

It wasn't very reliable, nor was it loud enough.

Granted I had it at a time when I had no idea how to run gear so my incompetence could have been a factor.

I don't recall being incredibly stoked on it,...but it was what I could afford when I was just starting out.

I replaced it with an SWR SM-500 (pre Fender pretty sure) at the time and the SWR was a way more pleasing amp. Nice hi-fi tone to it. Back then I didn't use any effects though.

i've had this weird thing where my amp is just WAY too loud right now. awhile ago i was having to turn each channel almost all the way up (it's a QSC GX5, so like 500 watts per channel at 4ohms) and it was still kinda wimpy. then i moved the gain knob on my preamp (Rustu Box) from 1/4 the way up to 1/2 way up.... and it was LOUD, but i still ran the amp at about 1/2 way. past practice i had the amp MAYBE 1/4 of the way up, and it was toooo loud. overpowering the drums and pa.

we DID just move to a new room, but it's the same exact size and shape as our last one. there's less equipment in there and it's not all cluttered up, but that shouldn't make such a difference right? did my amp just hit puberty and start lifting weights or sumphin? is it having a last firey hurrah before it burns out and dies?

i'm..... i'm SKEERED.

WEEEIRD. Turning a QSC almost all the way up should be HELLA loud. Did you do a switch-a-roo of anyting else in the chain?

Strange why it was quiet then suddenly OOMPFF.

How much less equipment?

In my experience, emptier rooms always sound louder.

Cane'yah - naw. same setup i've run forever. i mean, pedals switch in and out, but even just clean it's HUGE. weird.

Doses - urm, there was a 4 10 bass cab with a head on it and a half stack guitar. then a couple (gawd damn annoying and space taking up that doucher NEVER EVEN ASKED THE OTHER PEOPLE SHARING THE SPOT IF THEY WANTED THEM) shitty shelvew, basically 2x4's with a flat board on top. and the shelves had fucking clutter all over them.

it IS a cleaner room with more emptiness (LOVE IT), but i feel like i have the same volume 1/4 up i used tom1/2 or
more up.

Actually, the volume of the preamp signal going into a power amp can have a fucking HUGE effect on the total volume. As a matter of fact, we run all of our PA power amps (2 QSCs and a Behringer) all the way up all the time, and control the volume with the mixer, which serves as our preamp.

Yeah,...was in a band with a FOH experienced guy on the drums and he dimed his poweramps. That philosophy translated to my Pre/Poweramp rig I was rolling with at the time. I would turn the poweramp levels all the way up and roll it back ever so slightly and like BCBC; control my volume with the Pre.
