I've got an ibanez af2 airplane...paul gilbert's sig flanger. Paul was a big fan of the a/da so the AF2 sounds spot on. It's also got the wacky takeoff/oscillationsomething switch as heard in the intro here: [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x92csOySpRs[/youtube]
damn that does sound good. then again paul and paul's students (gratuitous buckethead reference) can pretty much make anything sound awesome. i'm not a huge spaced out effect guy though and i'm looking for something a little more adam jones i guess. just a subtle rhythm texture. the maxon can get close but it's hard finding a balance between subtle and spaceship with that one.
I never fully understood everything a compressor did because it seemed silly to want to compress your signal. But I just got a FX500 and soft focus uses a compressor and the soft focus patch uses a compressor. Reduced pick attack and moar sustain? YESPLZ!

Funny you should mention that. Next purchase will be a whammy or PS-whatever. But the FX500 is little. Like big box EHX size. Get wun and bring teh toanz. Oh and did I mention teh power button on mine is broken? It's always on.
But anyways Soft Focus with increased compression + maxed reverb + slowed flangey sounding modulation=titz.
