The only EHX pedal that disappointed me so far was the English Muff'n. I was expecting a really rich, harmonically dense, tubey OD, and instead got a buzzy solid-state sounding OD that basically sounded like a tubescreamer to me. I seriously don't think the tubes even do anything. Meh.

It's INCREDIBLY bright. Try using your middle pickup with the tone rolled to 0 (or neck pickup depending on your type) That should fix it up a bit.

Well I don't have it anymore, so I'll have to take your word for it. I ended up replacing it with a DHA VT-1, which is a much richer, creamier tube OD.

I don't like flangers at the best of times, but the deluxe EM is teh suck.

Don't see many people talking about the Frequency Analyzer -- I love that one. The old ram head one and the deluxe box size one too. Both great /weird sounding things.

Of those ones? For me it's the FS36999 (i.e., 2N5133s) 3003 Ram's head. It’s quiet (as in good s/n ratio), smooth not harsh.


Although I’m kinda digging the one in the middle here too — again FS36999s w/ 0.1uF caps and a 0.01uF output cap.




The other two are nice too -- one on the left has 1uF caps instead of 0.1uF and had a bad output cap when I got it.

I seriously need to get my act together and assemble my BYOC Large Beaver. It's the closest I'm ever likely to get to a Ram's Head Big Muff at this point. I kinda dig the NYC Muff now more than I used to (I have a new-ish Little Big Muff, with the knobs in reverse order, that I used to prefer for a long time, but it's a hell of a lot more "noisier" than the NYC, even if the NYC lacks the vlume of my LBM).

i have not heard anything good about the Frequency Analyzer. something about the carrier signal. plus there are other Ring Mods out there that are on my radar. if i were going to buy a Ring Mod...

Almost bought one back in the '70s but the exact day I had finally saved up the $$, the store that had one sitting around forever finally sold it.

Really? I like it -- It's the most musical sounding ringmod I've tried so far. Had a massive volume drop when I got it though, and I had Greg at SolidgoldFX clean it up and mod it a bit for volume. It does the job now. Of course I'm gassing for a ringtone too...

Thanks for the Devo vid -- I'd seen stills with that pedal taped to the guitar but not the vid

i've never actually used it, so i really don't wanna bad-mouth it. i did want it at one point becuz it is priced decently. but um, from a deductive standpoint, if people don't talk about it much and you really don't see it on many pedalboards, i mean either it is a criminally under-rated Ring Mod or not a very good one. IDK...

i just saw that Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge. i really LOVE the design of those pedals but at like $325/350 (USA/CAN) does it really compete w/ other Ring Mods at that price point or is this another "trendy" pedal everybody wants right now?

LOL. i just looked at the Youtube demo. actually, $325 doesn't seem that much for a Ring Mod, all things considered. i am really critical and skeptical when it comes to boutiques at that price point--especially overhyped ones--but it really seems like a really good pedal overall and i wouldn't mind getting it sometime down-the-road, but i really didn't see what it did on a basic Ring Mod level. if it does a decent Ring Mod it would buy it no doubt.
