I'm also a tired of watching gear demos on youtube and hearing the same SRV lick over and over. You could be trying to find some clips about some new brootalz fuzz pedal, and end up with front row seats at some shredfest. I rarely find demos where the piece of gear is used in a way similar to my styles and tastes.

i agree so much w/ that sentiment. i basically rely on Youtube demos to help expose & inform me about certain pedals. i've never gone to Guitar Center to demo a pedal: Youtube demos, Googling and word-of-mouth are what i rely on. the best guitar demos to me show what teh pedal actually does as opposed to what teh person demoing it can actually do with it.

if leads & shredding are a pedal's strong suits then fine. but whole notes, barre chording and & playing simple songs display more what a pedal can do IMO. if the pedal oscillates and motorboats or does other cool shit then yeah i want to see that too. but if for kicks i want to see some wankage i can drive 12 miles to guitar center and watch some washed up Jeff Beck has-been or some johnny lang looking motherfucker jack-off or whatever i can do that.

i think user demos are almost alwayz better than manufacturer & guitar shop demos though.

Anywho, I am proud to say I have never in my life been inside a GC... And I've only been in the dumpsters outside of Railroad Bazaar... (OKAY, Apparently RB only exists in the Southeast or something, but it's sort of similar to GC, but they sell more than just music equipment, I think)....

I think we *might* have a GC in town, but to be totally honest, I'm not sure... I know we have a couple of AB Stephens (again, might just be a regional chain), though...

We seem to have an unusual number of small shops for this sort of stuff, though (at least I think so)... But, yeah, I don't even go to those, haha!

IDK. they just built a GC down-road-the-road. the small mom & pop local store in-town only sells Fender/Peavey/& Digitech, their service is fucking atrociously rednecky and it really is only good for buying like guitar strings or like a Peavey Rage. i do think they have lay-a-way though.

i've only been to GC once. teh closest one used to be an hour away. i needed a needle for my turntable. i called ahead of time & asked if the sold needles. they said they did. but unfortunately they did not have the one for mine. but the GC dude did call Technics. gave me their number. Technics in turn gave me a number for a place in Indiana that i continue to use to this day when i need a needle for a TT. so the GC was helpful.

i've alwayz bought used via ebay, forum classifieds et cetera but as i slowly weigh the benefits of going to a music store and buying new pedals i increasing have to consider GC as an option. it is one of TWO EHX dealers in my area and like now the other independent dealer that carries EHX doesn't have the Memory Toy in stock (does have the Cathedral, Memory Boy, Turbo Rat, pedals i am considering buying new...) so i mean if i wanted the Memory Toy now instead of waiting a few days and paying for shipping i could just drive 12 miles to GC. or wait til the other guitar store about the same distance away ordered it.

Yeah, Guitar Center isn't really all that bad. Sure, there are kids playing horribly cliché riffs horribly...but, eh, we all start somewhere. They have a pretty good selection, though.

I do most of my purchases online, however, as I can avoid sales tax and usually get better deals.

i know now i have been seeing newish used pedals that people want to sell barely below retail. & that, in turn, makes me want to just say fuck it & pay retail. the Digitech Hardwire Reverb and the EHX Big Muff w/ Tone Wicker are prime examples. i am not buying that "like new" bullshit either. & no box & no papers? if it were "like new" you could take it back where you got it from & get a refund.

other times i have had to just be really really patient and wait. my first ILF pedal i got a good used deal on becuz i was patient but if i had not been patient and bought it on the ILF classifieds i would have paid a bit more. i mean still a good price for even a new one but i got the version i wanted & everything so it worked out extremely well.

but yeah, increasingly, i am at the point where now i want to buy retail & avoid the hassle of people who do not know what the term "depreciation" means: you bought it, you played w/ it, you got bored w/ it and now you want me to pay damn near full price for a USED pedal you are trying to "flip." fuck that...

this is such a good thread. aome asshole who i used to be in a band with was judging my choice to use and collect pedals ina vary harsh manner. he told me he didn't feel like encouraging my music because he thought that i, quote "was lazy" and i "hid behind a bunch of flashy tricks." so fucking stupid. he also accused me of ripping off some bands because my tone sounds very similar to said bands. nothing is more boring to me than an overly clean, tired sounding guitar tone.

well. there is a band. Make Believe. outta Chicago. Tim Kinsellas or whatever. & they don't use any effect pedals AT ALL for that band. by design. but they are GREAT. they're songs are funny too. it is not a "tone" thing either. Sonic Youth. early on in their career. used ZERO effects and relied on the distortion of their amps and alternative tunings. i mean. there are countless "no effects pedals" bands that don't sound like typical "no effect pedals" bands.

Wow, that same thing happened to me yesterday after my band played at my school. Except that it was my old non-band friend. SHe was telling us how it wasn't original and how we had too many effects, but all she listens to is Tool (many, MANY effects), music related to marijuana ( ), and 60's type music (not saying it's bad by any means, buts if we were to play that I feel it would be even less original than what we were doing.)

Those Kinsella boys are ridiculous. How can 1 family (2 brothers and a cousin) be apart of so many good bands?
