Interesting stuff about the RV500. I tried my friend's for half an hour or so and it sounded really nice but I was only playing with the front panel controls and I was a little disappointed by what was possible from there if that makes sense? Good to hear it's excellent for tweakers but I don't know if I could work with it on my board.

yeah i quite like the sounds and the possibilities with it are super cool!! but the interface is such a killer for me

i've got the empress on my board now and im not in love with it so my search goes on i guess. maybe i will go back to RRR and then add a spacey/gazey/'other' reverb too. maybe a hypersleep? who knows

blackjaw wrote:Mercury7 is my favorite of the “expensive” ones. It’s so lush and I feel like I had complete control over every little nuance.

I don’t own one anymore (or any Meris pedals) because to even get full use out of it you needed a midi setup. I got the midi setup and all was well...but it was just a huge pain in the ass to pull out my iPad or laptop to change presets or to make major edits to settings (with an app you can see and control all secondary functions). Sometimes I just want to jam with preset 2 (which I made to be a nice relaxing hall) but then I want to get weird with preset 6 (which was this choir echo drone that sounded like the ghosts of aliens in caves)...but I couldn’t be bothered to connect to change it all. I have an hour maybe per day after kids are in bed to practice or make noise and sometimes you just want to plug the guitar and go...and Meris just didn’t let me do that with my setup.
Spot on analysis. I graduated from the iPad to an ES-8 controlling the whole shabang, but sometimes I come up with combinations of things on the fly that I don’t have presets for and it hinders the process. It’s very frustrating when the hour you wanted to use to just play ends up going to messing w programming nonsense.

Reverb is an area I’ve neglected and this yr aparently being the year of the reverb I’ve been eyeing the new context 2...cause Red Panda (and MIDI CONTROL  )

RRR + droney verb (RM1N) is what I was using for ages instead of a single big fancy reverb box. Then I sold the RRR for some reason and only have the weird distorted reverb. I think I'm ok with it  that said I'd like very much to try some more of these big expensive pedals just not enough to spend the money buying them

But yeah all this stuff you guys are describing about presets and editing with an app... Don't like that.

Yeah the 500 series has the worst editing ive come across. nothing is hands-on about it even if the deep dive stuff is awesome it is kinda annoying to have to push buttons to change basic shit. kind of a bummer cause it still is next level shit compared to every other big pedal with presets

Yeah I've seen d.o.s. do some wild and crazy amazing things with the DD-500 but it just looks too annoying to set up for me. Great pedals but interface is not my bag

Yeah like I used the MD500 all over the place when I had one but having just 4 knobs where 2 are just effect level is really annoying. Eventide stuff is alot more better when you just can use it like a regular pedal and have all parameters in front. Also for some reason I felt it made the dry signal sound really weird for some reason? idk if the rv500 is like that though

Just emerging from a research rabbit hole to say that I might not want another highly-programmable reverb as much as I want to physically become a reverb trail and dissipate into the atmosphere, never to return to my corporeal form.

You know what? The Boss RV-5 is surprisingly awesome. The modulate of course is well known and revered but the room is excellent, especially for acoustic guitar.
And I own a ton of reverbs.

Overall the Poly Digit by far has the best sounding reverbs (and delays) but it should being actual IR's.

Also is it true that Dual mode is only available with room, hall, spring, and plate algos?
Sorry, I missed the questions.
I never tested the infinite decay. I never felt compelled to put it down and walk away to see if it would still be playing when I came back.
Yeah, I wish dual was more flexible but you can have two patches running at a time in series or parallel and that was enough for me.

The interface doesn't bother me. I had the DD500 first and messed around with it enough that it all became intuitive. It's easy enough to navigate when I'm just messing around at home.

Ohhhh my bad I thought Dual mode and the series/parallel patch thing were one and the same. Yeah that sounds like plenty to work with. I'm a psycho who enjoys programming patches and I would just be using at home, so I might end up getting it. I love the Wedge, but I can't use it when I want to overdub its signal over and over--the buildup of hiss gets bad. Though its sounds are so awesome, I probably won't sell it either.

@friendship tell me your Wedge secrets!

Here’s a short write up of the expensive reverbs I’ve used, note that a lot of this was when I was primarily a guitarist now I pretty much just do synth at home.

Eventide Space - sounds great, really fun an interesting to use. I’d love to get another for synths, but using it live freaked me out for some reason. The “parameters changed” led would give me anxiety and I’m sure I needed money so I sold it.

Strymon Blue Sky - Damn good reverb, no muss or fuss. I like the Strymon sound so assume bias.

Flint - fuck I wish I still had it. One of the top reverbs and the tremolo can do some awesome tricks as well. God tier pedal for guitar pedalboards IMO

Big Sky - best sound to my ears. From the first time I stomped on it, even a subtle reverb made my guitar sound like I was in a professional studio. Would love another to try on synths. Will buy another next year. I love Strymon and I don’t care!

Merits Mercury7 - I just didn’t get it. Granted I was playing lots of shows when I got it, so I didn’t put in the hours to find the secret tones, but I didn’t feel bad about selling it. Didn’t sound any better than any other pedal so I replaced it with an RV-6 that I got for $100 and happily pocketed the difference. I felt like it did the thing people complain about Strymon pedals where it sits above or beside the source sound. I hated the shimmer but maybe I should try one again. I mean shimmer sucks in general but it can be fun sometimes. I had no fun using it.

Source Audio Ventris - this is the first fancy reverb I got strictly to use with synths. I wasn’t blown away but I could see it being a great pedal for guitar. I sent it back to the store so I could get some ITB reverb, but I didn’t do that and I’ve been using my crusty old wedge instead.

Thanks for the writeup on those peddies. :D

Stuff I like to do with the Wedge.

- Set density and diffusion all the way to 0%, then set ER Spread set fairly high. Makes a crazy choppy, buckshot delayreverb.
- Utilize the full 230 seconds of decay the Large Hall has, and set either or both high damping/low damping to juuust above being above Off, then crank the Swirl up to maximum. Hit a single note, close your eyes, and listen to the decay very slowly filter and modulate over several minutes.
- Run monosynth through Quad Pitch, set each pitch shifter voice to be slightly out of tune to one another, panned to a different part of the stereo field, and each with different pre-delay settings. Then make sure the detuning editing page is open, play synth while using the sliders with your other hand to bend the voices in and out of tune. Massive.
- Swirly plates with heavily rolled off treble 4ever
- Make a very long, very complex patch, and then set its gate to be really aggressive. Play sparse, short percussive sounds and get these crazy bursts of huge ambience that abruptly shuts off.
- There's a lot you can do with making realistic spaces, especially with the Ambience and Stereo Room algorithms, but I mostly make the most unnatural sounds I can with it
