More like the antithesis to this thread.... this is more like my inner pleb.
My favorite RADIOHEAD song is 'Ripcord'
My favorite TOOL song is 'Prison Sex'
*Shrugs
I don't really like either though... even that feeling is too strong. I really don't have feelings toward either. Maybe more confusion? Like in High School... it always confused me when my friends said RADIOHEAD was an experimental band... excuse me?
Same with TOOL... to me they were always on K-Rock and played along with SUBLIME and other butt-rock bands. But apparently they're like prog-rock superstars?
inb4 "give them a chance"... not going to happen. On paper I am an 'adult' and a 'man' so... that just won't happen. I lead a busy life necro-bumping threads on a Norwegian Puppet forum.
I find Manyard [sic] insufferable too. I've always found it odd when people who are in Top 40 bands are rude to music journalists. Like, this whole ecosystem of PR and fandom is directly correlated to your livelihood. At least have the decency to be polite to the people that feed you press for your stadium shows.
Giving credit where it is due... at least everybody from RADIOHEAD has done interesting work since that band dissolved. Johnny Greenwood in particular I have tremendous respect for... but RADIOHEAD is about as experimental as Stevie Ray Vaughn.

2 pints. digital music was already free its called soulseek and share folder and an mp3 player.

3 pints. If you insist on spending money on digital releases, find some good (ideally local) music on .bandcamp.com and give your monthly subscription fee to those people.

4 pints. the idea of free music used to shock and scare people but somehow everyones perfectly OK living in 2019 where some non-musician CEO cokehead absorbed 2.5 billion dollars of the industry never having written or recorded a second of material.

5 pints. also bother yourself to listen to full albums. stop it with this algorithmic auto suggestion stuff. youre so lazy can you bother to just browse wikipedia or discogs for like 10 minites and figure out what albums/artists you might even be remotely interested in trying.

6 pints. also , and you know who you are, your idea of listening to music is with the built in speakers on your cell phone and/or laptop. none of your musical opinions matter even in the slightest. stop joining bands you are wasting everyones time.

7 pints. Zzz.
Honestly, no pints at all and I'm 98% with you. The only point I slightly disagree with is #6. I would have agreed years ago but 1. Did not have funds for headphones or speakers for a solid two years in college. Laptop speakers were what I need to listen to music. Not to mention I think of how rock and roll made it into the homes of people with nothing but a transistor radio and it greatly impacted so many. Again, only "slightly" disagree. 2. The blu tooth speakers imo have gotten so good. Had a bonfire this weekend and my Uncle put on some old CRAZY HORSE choons... maybe this is more a testament to the production but those guitars sounded sooooooo good on his little blu-tooth speaker. I would not play your Dub-step, UK Wobbly, UK Bass or and sort of break beat hardcore and it's derivative on one but... I don't know you lose something but some genres lose less than others.

I think #5 resonates with me a lot too. Some people's lack of intuition when finding music is just... remarkable. Their brains should be studied for science. Here is another crazy thought to those folks... TAKE OTHER PEOPLE'S SUGGESTIONS! Chank, Dandolin, Mechagodzilla, Ibarakishi, Olin and countless others have exposed me to soooo many good choons... and this is just one website that I visit!

Did someone post something about Grooveshark in this thread? Made me nostalgic for a minute.

I was just on the streetcar (“tram” to you brits) and I was listening to Nihilist and I was like “fuck this demo shit is better than Entombed” and I don’t even know if I believe it but it’s the kind of spicy hot take this thread likes.

I’ve got more and I just cracked open a beer so who knows what might happen.....

No pints in but I took some kratom. I am agreeing now and would be agreeing "sober". I strongly prefer NIHILIST to the ENTOMBED stuff. I like ENOMBBED but to me... it's like how I prefer the HELLHAMMER demo of Satanic Rights to the studio version.

Since we’re talking metal and I’m on beer #2:

Aside from Metallica (up until AJFA), the Germans rip over the US “big four”. Megadeth is awful. Anthrax are worse. Slayer are excellent.

But Sodom, Destruction & Kreator

Maybe as a Canadian I’m biased but Voivod are better than everyone.

Unleashed are the least exciting of the Swedes.

Church of Misery haven’t put out a solid record since Master of Brutality.

Dave Chandler is a better Saint Vitus singer than Wino (both are great)

I love Machetazo but I’m really bothered that the bass player uses a hollow body bass. It feels wrong. WRONG!!!!!!!!!

“Yeah” by XYSMA might be the ultimate Finnish death metal record? Don’t get my wrong I love Sentenced, Convulse, Abhorrence, Funebre, Purtenance, Demilich, etc but YEAH is too good!!!!!

Everyone likes to shit on Gatecreeper but their riffs are so sick and their live set fucking RIPPED SO HARD and people need to cut those riffs some slack because being on Relapse is not a crime.

Did someone say metal?

Work sucks and I'm here. Wish I was on beer 2.

Taken as a whole there is no comparison. Teutonic thrash was and is awesome.
Megadeth and Anthrax are wildly inconsistent, but they both have their moments. I particularly dig Megadeth. Slayer up until Divine Intervention were unimpeachable, since then they've been largely shit.

Voivod kill it.

Agreed.

Never listened to em.

Winooooooo! But I see your point.

Jeff Walker begs to differ.

Demilich! Also Amorphis' The Karelian Isthmus was a fucking banger. Lantern and Skeletal have been doing my right out of the newer generation of Finnish bands.

They're not worth the hype, but they're not rubbish either. Good fun band.

Church of Misery take is a good one but mostly because Master of Brutality fucking slays and it's super hard to follow up if that's your benchmark for "decent".

I am a music snob with my regular friends and a music pleb with my ilf friends.

For each pint I take I slur out something about
- the digital revolution of music was wasted on even more centralization of music
- I don't think spotify is as bad as we think, at least when considering how much money the industry sucks out of musicians.
- Sweden specific: our radio fucking sucks. one company owns all the private channels and they all suck. It is impressive how much our radio sucks when we have so much music for a small country. One figures that anyone could start a radio channel and play some good independent music. But no instead it all fucking sucks.
- a few pints in i might just admit that all I want to hear is synths through distortion pedals

I'll add "I don't even want to finish the video" I just want to put on videos and metaphorically flick through channels of that.

I wouldn't call this next point "snobbish" but I get "music delusion" (under the influence of things). Like I put this track on today and was convinced for a while it was the greatest song EVER made.

I model my clothing choices after her tbh. But soon I will have some patches to make some NJ transplant in Denver, DUTCH PANTS 2021.
I'm in charge.

Most of these bands sound the same to me. On NWN people would talk about this shit the way a sommelier would describe wine. Rest assured...they would mention "THE POWERFUL RIFFS!" Which makes me think that either they have a completely different definition of "riff" than I do or somehow all the riffs are on some frequency that posers like me can't hear.

:!!!: the best thread ever is back! I'm on no beers this time.
retinal orbita wrote:I will say - I did used to like Sunn O)))) - a lot! NWW remix, White 1 & 2, Oracle, Domkirke..... I dug it! I don’t think they have put out a good record since Monoliths and Dimensions. Altar is boring. Terrestrials is awful. Stephen O’Malley makes GREAT records with St. Francis Duo & Aethenor. EDIT: I got to see them live in 2005 - with Oren Ambarchi in a church with lots of fog and it was great! Oren did a solo set too - GREAT!!!
Okay you fuckin' got me - I wrote this October 2019 and then Life Metal and Pyroclasts were just fucking great released the same month. I'm back on the hype train. Very excellent work all around. Both records sound great. Sunn O)))) and Steve Albini. Yes. Yes it is good. Thank you. I reviewed my notes and I still think everything I wrote is pertinent and insightful.

I'm on no beers right now. I'm going to think really carefully about what I say next and post when I'm havin' a cold one amirite fellas?

Im a lightweight, so the shit would start flying immediately.

-If it doesn't have distorted guitars, it shouldn't be on any sort of alternative rock radio. Hearing fucking AJR and Post Malone getting played on the fucking rock radio is a disgrace. Its not rock, stop pretending it is.

-If you listen to singles by an artist and don't bother to listen to the full album or you find yourself incapable of doing so, your weak as fuck and cannot call yourself a fan of that artist.

-Hip Hop is real music. Saying its not is extremely insensitive to the men, woman and others who pour their lives into the artform. On top of that, it also makes you immensely racist.

-Its ok to be able to separate the art from the artist, but if someone can't listen to a certain artist anymore because of things they've ether said or done that needs to be respected. Both sides are valid.

-No style of music will ever be truly dead as long as there are still musicians playing it.

-SMASHING GUITARS IS OK FOR EVERYONE TO DO, GET OUT OF YOUR MOM'S BASEMENT AND STOP BEING A SEXIST CUNT.

-Discounting a genre of music just because its "not your thing" is no different from boomers saying rock is dead. Stop saying a certain type of music is trash just because you don't enjoy it when other people do.

-Power Rangers theme > TMNT theme
