I'm not sure if you ever said which was which but I clearly preferred the sound of the second clip. This is despite your efforts to dial them in to the same tone. If the question we are supposed to be asking is which one sounds better, for me that was easy. If you think they sounded exactly alike then I can see why you would be destined to be the Bossmann, all things being equal why not use price and availability as the guiding principles of your sound. I'm not knocking Boss, I've owned a few Boss and Roland products and think some of them are great, even legendary; I should have never ever sold my Juno-60 and will regret it until I die. And I will be buried with my ODB-3, even though I don't use it, it was my first...
the Metal Zone was clip 2. Like everyone else who gave their opinion, you chose 2 as the better sound.

When it comes to ODB's, I like this one best.

Almost bought one last week since he's making them again. Ultimately passed. I do have a VT125 coming in tomorrow, and will most likely end up selling it. No dis on Dunwich. The guy was straight up great to do business with and I'm sure the pedal will be amazing. I'm just getting out of boutique land in favor of cheapo's which get the job done. But having said that, I'd rather have your ODB rather than my ODB-3.

Thanks for the post. Perhaps I just don't know yet how to dial it in, but I find the gain knob doesn't cut thru a mix unless I turn it up to a level I'm not really comfortable with. I tend to play milder OD these days so perhaps that's why. I don't think the ODB-3 shines at low gain, but I am very happy that it works for you.

Oh god yeah it's a nasty pedal. I always have it post filter/synth/octave to add its nasty higher frequency distortion, bringing harmonics from the synth pedals so much further out than they were ever supposed to be. But yeah I pretty much max the gain, have the bass and treble both on 9 o clock and adjust level and clean/dist blend to taste.
EDIT - 3 O CLOCK !!! Not 9 o clock
Thanks for the input man. Yeah, the ODB-3 is pretty crappy for my purposes, but it sounds BOSS for what you are doing.

I actually do have a for sale ad up but am not quite sure I'm selling yet. I want to check it out first to see how it compares to my MD-2. If you're serious, you're first in line and I will contact you via PM if I decide to sell, which I will know tomorrow soon after it arrives. I do want to see as close to, or exactly what I paid for it ($192) because I am literally opening the box and testing it for a minute to see if I like it or not. May not even do that if you want it new in the box. In other words, I can probably live without even opening the box. Your call. Check out my feedback at Reverb so you can see you're dealing with a straight shooter
https://reverb.com/shop/mannys-gear-emporium-1. We can do the deal thru Reverb if it makes you more comfortable. PM me to explore this more if you want.

I think he does free repairs for life but yeah, overpriced, oversized, underdesigned.

Aren't most of the "weird" bands in the 90s using Boss or some other non booteek stuff back in the day?
Give any shitty Boss pedals to the one person with a fucked up creative mind and they will create a wall of Amigas and C64s sound instead.
There must be better examples but the ones I can think of right now: Lightning Bolt, Melt Banana, Black Dice. And probably not "weird" enough but GY!BE pedalboards were mostly Boss, but don't worry they are
cool now.
This is true. Work with what you got/is readily available. Agata has started using some boutique stuff as well though, since some of it is better suited for his needs. Which is all that matters in the end: whatever does what you need it to do best, rather than what is cool or punk or edgy.

loool...now he's bragging about his income. I admit, it's borderline entertaining to see what levels of d-baggery he'll discover next.

The ODB-3 is the shit. It's pretty far from what I'd call a 'bass overdrive though'. More like the bastard child of an FZ-2 and HM-2 imo

Costs a couple bucks on the used market, has a good eq and a clean blend...Just a super useful tool for any board that doesn't serve any "mild" or "subtle" purposes

There weren't really choices back then like there are now. Even through a lot of the aughts, Zvex and Devi were practically the only games in town in the "boutique" scene.

Tremolo3 is totally right, but it wasn't exactly what I meant either. Sure you can do weird stuff with stuff that isn't intended for weird, with feedback loops and whatever. That's awesome. The DD-series hold modes make really cool glitchy riffs and you can mod Boss pedals to be all sorts of crazy. No doubt a lot of the stuff that exists now builds upon what Boss, and others, has created. Doesn't mean everything does the same stuff though. Way back you did flanging manually, now there is tons of pedals that does it. Or the demo tape fuzz (booteekekeakke) is a simulation of overloading the preamp of a 4 track, which is arguably a more sensible way to get that sound. Before glitch-type sounds could be found by carefully twiddling with PS-3s or old DOD/Digitech loopers and now a CT5 can do it. Neither is better, neither is worse.

For what little it's worth to the conversation, I much preferred the ODB-3 on guitar than on bass. Blew the big muff off my board with its angular aggression. Had trouble dialing out the treble, even with the treble at the lowest settings, though.
