LOL-ing at the Periphery jabs in this thread. I can't stand either of the vocal styles they incorporate. One sounds like castration and the other, constipation. Destiny Potato is even more irritating on many levels, but I still listen to them at times because they're the only Djenty-thall-core band I know of with clean female vocals (oxymoronic as that may sound). I recall seeing a YouTube video of Fredrik Thordenthal tinkering with a 9-string guitar at some point in the last year. I wonder if they'll be adding an extra string on the next Meshuggah release and, if so, what purpose the bass player will serve.

They've already done an album without a bassist (cannot recall which one), but a guitar tuned low cannot substitute for bass, IMO.
Conan are a great example of that. The bass playing is mostly up the neck and is in the same octave as the guitar save for low bombs.

The one exception to this rule is Black Cobra, where if you weren't told it was two guys, you'd think it was five.

I agree about guitar not being a proper substitute for bass and was thinking more about overlap ... though Glass Cloud incorporates a bass player tuned an octave below 8 and 9-string guitars. I can't begin to imagine the thickness of strings, scale length, or height of action required to pull off such a feat ... or the EQing challenges they face both live and, potentially, in the studio.

Koloss is tuned higher than Obzen though, going as far as using a 6-string on a song. :idk:

On the 8 string songs the bass is literally in the same octave as the guitars-Dick Lovgren tunes to drop Bb and mimics the roots on his 4/F string.

Exceptions are Obzen where he's in Drop A one octave below the main riff and Bleed where he's in C# standard.

Perhaps a good time for a friendly reminder that notes are not equal to tonality.

The way Meshuggah uses the bass guitar is integral to their sound. Doesn't matter that they are on the same octave. Dick's bass tone is sick.

Wow just listened to Destiny Potato. LOL. Talk about a bad mix man. Those vocals are just terrible with the music.

I've just quickly listened to all their albums and they all have bass on them. Unless you got the special cane toad version with no bass...
:animal:

They did play a few gigs without a bassist due to shit.

Reminds when they did a run of shows without the vocalist and instead got a life size cut out of him and put it on stage.

I never tire of this video. Thordendal's solo is the best.
