YEEEAAAH. I actually love The ConstrucKtion of Light and The Power To Believe. I caught King Crimsons last tour (the one with 3 drummers) and it blew my tits clean off. They had plain white lights for the whole show, no moving or coloured lights, just musicians being amazing on stage. Then the lights turned red an hour later when they played 'Red' and back to white straight after. Perfect!

and, people will probably say this isn't prog, but I feel like it's prog done on the cheap (and much better for it), they couldn't afford fancy synths and amps etc, so they used cheap organs, ethnic drums and tape loops instead, and also embraced tape editing to switch between different takes done in different locations with a complete change in tone and space. Definitely a top 5 album for me.
If you don't like the track at 23:26 then there is no hope.

For older stuff, hardly anything beats Crimson and Pink Floyd's Animals for me. Or some Zappa... fucking Inca Roads haunts me at night
For that early 90s nostalgia, Images and Words by Dream Theater is an awesome album. Arguably their absolute best, it will always have a special place in my heart
for more aggressive stuff, Between the Buried and Me... Alaska or Colors. Devin Townsend. Periphery really hit some proggy strings with Periphery II: This Time It's Personal and Juggernaut (Alpha/Omega). The Ocean have done some awesome stuff. Mid-to-later-era Opeth - mainly Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park and Watershed - are total jams.
for modern rocky shit, my top has been The Dear Hunter. Karnivool are one of my fave bands of all time, so is Oceansize. Even after being disappointed, I will always have a place in my heart for Steven Wilson's solo project and always for Porcupine Tree (the disappointment does not apply there). Thrice's Alchemy Index is totally badass. Some of The Mars Volta is hella proggy to me, too.
personally, I always appreciate musicality above everything when it comes to proggy stuff. So interesting genre versatility and combinations, sound designs, putting a twist on maybe more classically rock sound is proggy enough for me sometimes. bands that value intricate chops and complexity over the content are not for me - hence my dislike towards later Dream Theater but also a lot of Yes and Rush - there are records or songs I really like but then there's the everything else
if anyone wants to call me out on anything I listed not being prog - i think it's a super-wide umbrella term and perhaps more ofa feature than a genre. PS: I'm sure I've forgotten loads of stuff

I wish my guitar playing wasn't as influence by my failing to play those albums in standard tuning.

The singer of The Ocean dislocated my jaw stangediving when I saw them in Atlanta. I was so pumped that I just locked it back in place and kept jamming out.

After the show he ran up to me and apologize profusely in his his cute swiss accent.
...The drive back home was awful because of it though.

Yeah, that is sort of the beauty of it. I mean, when I hear the term, my mind goes to the late sixties - early seventies stuff that I've posted, but it's fun to see everyones take on it. Used to be into stuff like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree and fucking Ayreon back when I was fourteen or so, but it passed. I mean, the point of prog is that it should be progressive (shockingly), and it seems that a lot of latter day prog rather just uses the "prog sound" than actually doing something semi-new and exciting.
I agree on the technique thing, but I never really got why Yes is lumped into that category. Close to the Edge is such a musically strong piece, and though parts of it are more technically advanced than four chord punk, I think it adds rather than detracts from the music. I mean, it's far from Liquid Tension Experiment levels of wankery.
Anyway, D.o.S sent me this, which is really cool:

Awww yisssss.
It was actually this track that made me think of you:

(and it has "Part III... epic swordfight" in the title, so it's obviously prog).

This's, apparently, Swedish impressionistic prog from the Eighties:
