And Kid Cudi is more or less responsible for all of 808's sound, but you know, genius is measured solely around which records CC heard first:

Note the pronoun.
Yeah Cher's song "Believe" did the auto tune thing way back in 1998.

How come every time I search ANY music on Youtube, this old lady shows up. Does anyone know who she is? I've never clicked on one of her videos because I absolutely hate her. If you know who she is, tell her I hate her.

+1. He pretty much invented the pitched-up Motown sample thing that's become ubiquitous in modern rap sampling.
Also, he was one of a few 2000s artists (Imogen Heap, Bon Iver) who began to use autotune as an instrument, rather than as pitch correction. This is now beyond ubiquitous to the point of overuse, but when he released
808s and Heartbreak, it wasn't like anything else I'd heard before.
He's stated many times that he prefers listening to rock music over rap, and his samples attest to it; a lot of prog, kraut, and psych on every album, all very well used, too.
One of the best uses of fuzz on vocals ever on "Runaway."
I do think he's a genius, for sure.
First correction: RZA was doing the "chipmunk soul" shit in the mid 90s and the credit goes to him afaik.
Second: *Autotune as an instrument* existed for decades as vocoders and talk boxes. Peter Frampton pmuch made a career of it. Daft Punk ring a bell?
Third: Ye has an ear for loops, arrangements & hooks...and is a passionate guy about it all. If he were as smart as ppl (including him) think he is... he'd abandon the autotune and put out an album of Golddigger-type renaissance. It would be HUGE.

For my part I didn't say he was the first to do the "chipmunk soul" samples I said he was responsible for the early 00's hits by Jay-Z and others. He brought it to the mainstream. (Although I don't think your comment was directed at me, just to clarify haha).
Also auto-tune is not the same thing as a vocoder.

He brought it to the mainstream.
Isn't that what I said...? "Popularized"?
OBVIOUSLY... I knew about Cher and T-Pain. I almost wrote "T-Pain" in the little list of other artists but I thought you would laugh at me for even saying "T-Pain." Ya can't fuckin win...
Kid Cudi isn't responsible for the
808s sound. He was a big part of it but talk about "surface."

I think you might need these right about now:

Damn you and your accountability and stuff!
Anyway, I obviously knew about T-Pain. You can't seriously be asserting that I was unaware of T-Pain.

This is my attitude toward every thread on ILF that doesn't contain the words "rad," "fuzz," and "pedal" in that order.
Still not sure casecandy is serious about anything. You've got to be aware that D.o.S. is making a second career out of baiting you. You always bite. And it's exquisite.
Anyway, Kanye. It's not for me.

Yeah the corrections are for cc's hubristic proclamations

& I'm still

[wtf!] implying RZA aint mainstream.
ATTN cc: Holla at Bobby Digital. In stereo
Also I'm aware of the difference in hardware vocoders, talk boxes...harmonizers...& software like autotune...my point was to pump them brakes at gushes of *groundbreaking technique* in producing a distinct style of sustained, robotic-harmonized-into-flourishes-of-melisma type vox as a focal point, crutch, or gimmick. IMO its as dated as gated 80s snares w/chorus on everything...only this style's pushback cant seem to come soon enough. If/when Kanye puts out an album with conspicuous absence of autotune the mainstream will declare [it] dead, because he's like a living meme slideshow & treated as if he invented hiphop and arthouse theatrics. He's just good at it...but I have never been a fan of his vox & delivery. Still, he's good at it.
Fav song on the new album is Real Friends. Autotune & all, but I could really do without
it

I think RZA has more talent in his pinky than Kanye has in his whole body. That said suburban white girls don't bump Wu-Tang like they do Kanye. I also saw 808 and Heartbreaks for sale at Whole Foods. Couldn't imagine (and don't want to

) Wu-Tang albums being sold there.
