Are we still sure about that?

If I recall, the main reason he was so down during that last tour is that his mom (maybe grandmother?) Died right before the tour and it kinda ruined it for him, but they still had an obligation to do it.

I feel like this time around he has to actually want to do it.

Whenever my grandfather thought I was lying to him, he would use his pointer finger to pull his lower eyelid down, and ask me, "Do ya see any green in there, Andrew?"

I was always totally amused by the presence of the similar gesture in anime (like in the pic a few posts back).
