Don't know if the guy on the Micro-Frets is the one doin' the hot pickin', but it sounds great.
(Also, my downstairs neighbors are listening to Tribe Called Quest right now.)

Looks like Johnny & June are rocking some AKG D202s.
That lollipop looking harp mic has me stumped too.

It was recorded at Van Gelder Studio. Do you think these are the same type of mics?
Also, here's Wayne Shorter with a crazy round mic:

The collar below the spherical windscreen is completely different on the Dorothy Ashby cover. A quick "background check" on Rudy Ven Gelder indicates he was fairly guarded about his process, and it was not unheard of for him to plant dummy mics as red herrings to discourage copycats. So, given that it's on an album cover, that may in fact be a tea strainer and a parts dog for cable connectivity instead of a microphone, or maybe there's a Reslo or something smaller inside.
I wound up searching some pretty strange terms, and beyond the Acos 22 or some Western Electrics I can't find anything that gets that close to a disco ball (until the 1970s anyway). Western Electric was an obvious choice, but I couldn't find a match. I'm guessing he engineered a special shroud, sort of like DJs removing the labels from their LPs, or it's from a parts bin/kitchen drawer.
Funny how asshole antics turn cool given enough years, all that shit is more or less unobtanium now anyway.

Thanks, crochambeau. Either way, I find it all pretty interesting.
I've seen photos of mics like those before. I just can't remember where.

I'm still looking for the stardust microphone. Have ruled out a ton of companies...still think it is an AKG or something.
Good info on the mics though...neat stuff.

Brush Microphones maybe?

I know the base on the harp mic below the wind screen is wider and shorter and the cord comes from the wrong place...but maybe there were some other models or more rare ones? Or they changed over the production time. It was made to plug into different bases though...

Nice find, lordgalvar, they're certainly very similar.

I actually don't care what mics they're using, I just wanna listen to Os Mutantes:

What's with me & mics lately?
Here's another shot of Van Gelder Studio:
What do you think this mic is?

I wonder if those disco ball mics are ribbons, good choice for horns.
That bottom mic looks like a Shure 545, precursor to the SM57, though you can find both Unidyne II & Unidyne III in the drive through order window / podium base (I've given up on true technical terms for that)

I forgot about this clip. Love that taped up microphone array. (Don't bother trying to ID 'em.)

Thanks, Meriphew, excellent suggestion…
except I don't wanna join Gearslutz. I can't afford any of these mics anyway. Just kicking the tires.
