I came back to reveal this find:

Okay, so here's an unsolicited breakdown of her entire career.

She grew up in Russia and got hooked on rock music with bootleg Beatles and Billy Joel records.

She's Jewish and that sort of self-deprecating humour creeps into her music (and her support for Israel has caught her some flack before).

Most of her songs are very esoteric, oddball observations of things in society, though.

Similar artists: Rachel Yamagata, Nellie McKay.

The first three albums, 11:11, Songs, and Soviet Kitsch are super stripped-down, just Regina singing with a piano, and sometimes a drum machine or djembe. Fucked up, weird pop music that veers between rap and cabaret and Joni-Mitchell-style folk, sometimes in Russian. Songs is great because it's got "Samson" on it which is just literally the most breathtaking song of all time.

After that she released the compilation Mary Ann Meets The Gravediggers which is tracks from those three albums and probably the best one to start with.

After that, she went pop and started working with people like Jeff Lynne and such. The albums Begin To Hope and Far are really strong writing-wise (she re-recorded "Samson" for the former). Some of her songs are very wise and somehow fragile at the same time and I like that.
