Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
All that was back in the Bakersfield era when all the dudes that played kinda clean but loud used carvin, peavey, or kustom whatever-they-could-get and all the metal guys were using rack setups or mesa/boogie or both for more cabzzz. The Sovtek is from that weird era where they were an affordable tube amp, so people I think have a little mojo nostalgia about them. They ain't bad at all but if I had a choice back then...I probably would of just saved up the extra 200 or whatever for that model t or 1200s that sat in the music shop for probably 20 years. haha. (but 200 or 250 that I spent on my sovtek seemed like a big deal).
The only guy when knew with a fender we always thought was kinda goofy because it was so small and, at the time, it sounded so jangley clean haha...mostly used it for a practice PA and a place to spend pocket change on new fuses. But that was a different time...
Umm, yea. I think their are plenty of good suggestions man. I would take the bassman if you could pull it off maybe, but if the dude is really into cleans he should probably pick it himself (yea, I know). I was just in the same boat with that cello player which kinda sucked. He picked the fender hot rod on his own so that was good I guess...it sounds alright (but not my thing haha).
So what I am getting around to is what Pope just said (about the bassman for the dude and for the time to try stuff) haha

Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
Oh, believe me I've tried. He just *doesn't* understand things.
His other friend and I totally want the one he's passing on now too.
I wish even 5-10 years ago I took advantage of those deals on the better amps just by saving.
Well we'd leave it up to him but the problem is we have the guitar here in the bay and he lives in the central valley. It wasn't selling there and it needed a setup to make it more sellable so I took it in, fixed it up, and put it up for sale here where there's a bigger market. I'm seriously just scouring CL for clean Fender silverface amps now.

Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
Nothing really sells in the Central Valley unless it says "free" haha. I just cleared out two houses worth of stuff. Wish I would've kept more.
They are all into Ibanez, Kramer, ESP, Strats and stuff like that there...more modern stuff (super strats). Gotta remember that it takes a hairstyle 2-5 years to go from LA to Bakersfield (that's what we used to say though, haha). But there is a larger outsider (ie LA people) population there now...still think they are super cheap as a general rule though. And everybody bought dumb music stuff there (like guitar center junk that was the cheapest like those line 6 heads becaue the featuress, bro)... I don't know how different Fresno and stuff is though as a market (there were a few cool collectors around though)
Good luck man! It'll get done. But yea, no matter how much you like gear, buying for the dude with a strange, unrealistic want is always weird (like trying to explain to a cello player that a high gain channel is not something you probably want or need...oh, trying to get him to stay away from digital modeling amps...haha)

Sometimes I wish we could get those East Coast prices listed in the "deals" thread haha. California sucks in some ways.

Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
I have a friend who lives in New York now, so I look at the CL postings over there from time to time in hopes of finding one of those deals.

Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
peavey classic 50s are readily available on craigslist and have plenty of headroom
I got my 4x10 for $325 and at that price it's a steal imo
now if only I could find one of the 1x15 cabs...

Carvin X100b is always available for way less than you would expect so.... Go for that if the Bassman/Twin deals fall through.

Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
I'm totally late to this thread, but I'll chime in with the Twin people—that'll always be what immediately pops into my head when I think of a clean amp. I also like that there's a really nice blunt thwak kind of thing that happens when you run a good, round OD into them. Plugging my Catalinbread SFT into my Twin especially does that for me. With certain ODs though, it can get pretty harsh and glassy, just have to find the right one.
I'm pretty much a combo guy, but of course my mind also goes to Model Ts and Hiwatts. But, monies.
Weirdly enough, a super clean option that surprised me lately was the Fender Hot Rod Michael Landau amp. That guy's a guitar-goob, buttery shredder type and totally not my style (obv a good player, loved by many, just not my cup of tea), but I wondered when I played his amp if it might appeal to an unexpected audience. From what I understand, it's meant to be an amp for pedals—it's like the normal Hot Rods, but there's no dirty channel, instead two cleans. Tons of headroom, and LOUD.
Of course many people hate the Hot Rods, either because they find them too bland or worry about PCB issues. I still think they're pretty great for an amp you can find pretty much any day on CL for around 400 bucks (though not sure that price/readily-available used status will apply to the ML).

I was incredibly unimpressed with my musicman that I had for a while. Really don't get the obsession with these amps. Everyone's different, I suppose.echodeluxe wrote:music man!!!!!!

Yeah, people really seem to fucking love those things. I've only messed around with one once, and it really wasn't enough time to form any kind of solid opinion. Love John Dwyer's sound though.WeHuntKings wrote:I was incredibly unimpressed with my musicman that I had for a while. Really don't get the obsession with these amps. Re: REALLY clean/pedal platform tube amp
So my friend is taking back his Hot Rod Fender Deville 40watt 1x12 combo back to guitar center. 2 weeks in, the thing is popping and and the jack or solder is bad or something. He is going to get a '68 Custom deluxe reverb (which is what I told him to check out in the first place). haha...
Tried to talk him into getting a Sunn like I have or a Supro, but his wife didn't like the looks so he is kinda stuck with the fender (he's not allowed to get something that "clashes" with interior or look kinda beat up). He honestly liked the clean in my beta lead with his cello but wants tube..I kinda cautioned him about the hot rod (like don't settle, get the better amp and you want have to buy again). Helping friends sucks.
Similar demands to Waltdogg's friend...super clean tube amp for pedals but not that loud. We shall see what he ends up with.
