Yeah I don't get them either. A lot of the local homies are freaking about tame impala. We do this thing were every couple weeks we get together, drink, and listen to a predetermined album. It's pretentious and silly but always fun. Multiple dudes were trying to call tame impala, which has never happened because having something cool that no one else knows is a big part of it. Anyways I digress. The tame impala album was the most mediocre thing we've listened to yet.

Tame impala is totally mediocre and overrated.

But what's not to love about Ty Segall? He just makes good garagey, psychy rock. Both solo and with White Fence...

Also, yeah, "Sister Christian" is such fucking shit! I've never been more consistently annoyed by a song over the course of my life. It bugged the shit out of me in high school and it still bugs the everliving shit out of me. The verses don't match the choruses, the whole thing is like a watered down version of "Here I Go Again On My Own," and... those lyrics! "Motoring"? Fucking "motoring"? "What's your" fucking "price for flight"? Unbelievable. Worst chorus ever.

Fun fact: Jet were basically manufactured by some label people in a notoriously shitty HOME OF MELBOURNE LIVE MUSIC pub that's just across the road from the office building I'm sitting in right now. They were fucking garbage and anyone from Melbourne that tries to be nostalgic about 'those first few shows' is a lying pig person and ONE OF THEM.

Another fun fact: the second (of three) of those HOME OF MELBOURNE LIVE MUSIC places' lax checking of ID in the 90s is indirectly responsible for my earlier hatred of, and now supreme ambivalence towards, the Ramones.

Jet have always been manufactured garbage.

I disliked them from the moment they followed up their cover of Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life" with yet another cover of The Beatles' "Sexy Sadie."

Never got why a cover band made it so big...?

I think ambivalence towards The Ramones is pretty widespread in 2015... hopefully tempered with respect, but nonetheless.

I thought you liked manufactured garbage?
Jet were more than a one hit wonder?
What is wrong with the fucking Ramones?

Figures that shit was record label garbage like Incubus or something. Fuck 'em. Thought they were shit from the moment they first got on the radio here. Guida is a way better band drawing from Slade and Sweet. Fuckin' a. I think they are fresh on my mind because of some video about DBA I watched the other day. :idk:

Tame Impala does suck and my friend swears they are the greatest band in existence along with Radiohead and Yes.

Ramones are just good fun. Love them and the inspiration they provided. Made some stickers though.

Ty Segall sucks. LA hipster. As does Ariel Pink...worst live act I have ever seen.

a) No?
b) I acknowledged that?
c) Nothing? Just heard them too much so it's white noise to me?

Ariel Pink obviously sucks. Huh, I would've thought Ty would've been immensely popular 'round this neck o' the bend. Oh well, to each their own.

Incubus is not major label garbage. Mike's one of the favourite guitarists for many reasons... an effects guru IMO. But Brandon Boyd... sweet motherfucking hotdogs, can that surfer douche sing and/or write poetry about boning girls. In the '90s they were a better version of RHCP's funk-nĂ¼-metal thingy and afterward the guitar just became insane. I still listen to A Crow Left of the Murder on the regular.

This song is my singing into a broom handle while sweeping the kitchen song. For the solo I flip the broom sideways and air guitar on it. #Unashamed

He's a dick, too. Like lordgalvar pointed out, LA hipster. With all the worst of what that entails.

it's something particular to only people my age and from my area, seriously. If you grew up in melbourne in the 90s and wanted to find something remotely punk at various points you would end up at the Tote Hotel, because they never checked IDs, where you would be bashed over the head with seven bands a night doing really shitty oz-rock takes on the Ramones.

Now I grew up in a weird suburban taste-ghetto where they weren't my first exposure to punk like pretty much everyone else. So my first fifteen thousand experiences of the Ramones were those terrible bands. It's the same category as how my first exposure to Bad Brains was 'god of love'. So punishing that at this point I just can't let them into my life, no matter how influential both bands were. They need to get you at the impressionable age and at this point I'm like 'cool, that's influential on a lot of stuff I love but I'm having flashbacks to being 14 and getting spewed on and threatened with a stanley knife on the 2am bus back to the suburbs'.

The PA at The Tote fucking rules for heavy shows these days though. Such an overpowered system for the room, fantastic.

They fired their first bassplayer because he was fat and didn't dress to their bargin-bindie glam schtick. Enough said.

Source?

So far as I know, no one outside the band really knows 100% what happened there. But he and Brandon weren't talking prior to his departure. Given the radical stylistic change after he left it's likely creative disputes entered the picture. Anyway they became a better band after that, because they picked up Ben Kenney from The Roots. I remember being so excited when that happened. Like it was an important if lowkey moment in the history of rap-rock relations. Ben is an incredible musician (Mike claimed he can play guitar better than he can).

That song I posted ("Sick Sad Little World") is about Dirk.

I have some bands like that dase. Black Flag is one of 'em...just couldn't stand the kids that ran around being morons in my hometown saying shit like "Black Flag is the only band that matters, fucking queer" and doing all the dumb shit rednecks do when the get loose....my first exposure was actually Crass, Dead Kennedys, Toy Dolls, Subhumans, Misfits, and 7 seconds on a mix tape. I kinda grew into the Ramones later (no one liked 'em where I am from) by just thinking of 'em as a fun band.

Incubus and the bass player. It was something like dase said if I remember. After they kicked that dude out, they had "open" tryouts for bass players...you know setup by the label to show how DIY and stuff they are.....yea, they hired the dude from the roots the day after or something. Only reason I know this was because my friend, who was a great ska, funk, reggae bass player* went to the try out. Pretty much said they didn't give anybody a shot, the band wasn't there...My friend went kind of as a joke and didn't have a job so he thought it might be funny and might end up with a check even though he hated the band.

...anyway, he got info and I had confirmed it with some article later (don't remember it) that members of the band (and linkin park) were from other signed bands that the record label split to make marketable groups. I wish I knew where that article was...I'll look.

Anyway, yea...then they switched sounds...and like Sum 41, Paramore and all that crap, they just changed to what was marketable and trending at that time to maintain relevance and continue to sell (I remember my friends saying something like "Why is incubus ripping off At the Drive In?" "because the shitty mike patton impression wasn't selling anymore"....I had never heard of at the drive in until that day and never cared to check them out, haha). But yea, Incubus sucks...and I can tell you that by just hearing the two or three songs they play on the damn radio.

Agata is a much better effects guru.

I'm going to pretend that that rap-rock relationship comment didn't happen.

* (a little mechanical but was getting better on that which was the only real criticism...he started playing bass when we switched in a band we were in years earlier...I went to vocals and he took my bass and got pretty damn good)
