Music aside, if you think religion is a tool of social control, you can't be more than half right. It like a lot of other things can be used as a tool of social control. That's it. All things in moderation. Religion used properly is a tool of personal liberation. "Let my people go." "The Kingdom of Heaven is within you." It isn't Moses' and Jesus' fault that a bunch of fuckboys half understood them and ran in the opposite direction.

The practical half of religion -- the preestablished set of rules that believers are expected to follow is, by definition, never a tool of personal liberation. The only response I can muster right now is a 'pffft.' Sorry no energy or drive to get into it further.

It's actually been an abbreviation for Christian for a long time, at least a hundred years or so (appears in Aldous Huxley's writing while in Palestine, for example). The Romans used to persecute the Christians and one way to secretly identify each other in public was to draw a line in the sand. Then the other person would draw a line across it, making the Roman numeral X, 10. The logic behind "Xmas" as an abbreviation for Christmas is the same.
Yeah, it's still pretty stupid.
Hey, did you fucking listen to Van Der Graaf Generator yet? You keep avoiding my question, leading me to believe you're not a true music snob. Sorry, xusic xnob.

I didn't! I've always known who they are but never actually listened. Before you criticize me for that, consider that I could've been a poser and said "I'm totally down with VDGG!" which would have been much lamer. I didn't mean to question-dodge

And what, pray tell, must I read?
Marx? Dawkins, Hitchens, Ali, Harris, Myers, and Dennett? Russell? Pinker?
What if I told you I'd read all those authors? In the case of Dawkins, literally his entire oeuvre to date, and most of Pinker's?
The Bible, the Dhammapada, the Bhagavad Gita, the Quran, selections from the Talmud, the Book of Common Prayer?
Joseph Campbell, perhaps? The Satanic Bible? The Necro-fucking-nomicon?
Is this what Yoda recommends?

Matt Talbott and Peter Hammill are living legends.
Legends who do not seriously argue religion in a joke music thread.
Welcome to the philosophical debates of a youtube comment section.
Nerds.

I wish Jfrey and devnull still posted here they do a much better job of roasting dipshits than anyone else on ILF to date (no offense case you're adorable but you're legitimately stuck at age 13 Peter Pan status).
