The thing I always say when this argument comes up (apart from 'skrewdriver were always terrible even before the racism') is that there's no hard and fast rule for listening to music by objectionable people. It's what we each come down to feeling comfortable with individually. Saying that people should just ignore it if the music is good bugs me though. Everyone has an emotional response to music in some way and if you don't want to listen to slint for a while because it brings up uncomfortable feelings, who am I to tell you 'yeah but like washer man'.

“I think it’s okay if an artist is an asshole to some extent (I have a hard time excusing racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc, of course, but am okay with someone being crotchety). They don’t owe you anything other than their art. Hell, I’d rather an artist was an asshole than a Scientologist. But that’s why I never really want to meet most of my heroes. I’d rather not know them personally and just enjoy whatever it is about their art that speaks to me.”
That's a quote from Laura Jane Grace, the singer/songwriter who fronts Against Me! from her Reddit AMA

Interesting take...

Are you white? It may be because you're white. I don't think it was truly meant for us honkies LOL
This is why all black people ever hate Modest Mouse.

Everybody always used to ask me if i liked against me and i would always think they meant born against so id be like YEAH THEY ARE TOTALLY GREAT BEST BAND until i actually found out against me is a band and they are the sonic equivalent of erectile disfunction. One of the greatest regrets of my life is that i can't go back and undo all of that and now there are people walking around out there that think i like against me.

Ha, I was talking to this dude my wife's friend was dating that kept trying to big league me on "independent" music because he was in a band and worked in "the industry" (television). He name dropped Men's Recovery Project and I mentioned that I played my first show with Wrangler Brutes, "You know with that dude from Born Against". He was like, "Is that an Against Me cover band I haven't heard?". I just stopped talking. haha

Anyway, I got roped into going and seeing his alt country band later...I already knew this wasn't going to be Wovenhand or SCAC, but I wasn't expecting to get an even shittier version of Nickelback.

WHOA WAIT YOU PLAYED WITH WRANGLER BRUTES?!?!!!! THATS AWESOME!!

Against me are the limpest, most entry level shit. The music and scenes they inspired are far worse though.

Yea. It was one of the first shows I played. It was pretty fun. There was another band on the bill too that was based on The Eradicator from Kids in the Hall (they were called Eradicator obviously).

Proof?:

Anyway, Jerry's Pizza is pretty neat...the venue is in an old underground tunnel system that was used to trade between buildings kind of secretly. Run very badly and lame though. It's a lot like the Cavern Club in Liverpool actually. Damn, that was11.5 years ago...haha.

Eh, I don't know if anybody around here knows of Loser Life or Going Underground Records, but Every Song Is a Revolution was a precursor emo-ish band that Ronald from those things had. There were a ton of those bands with the same people (it's funny when I see those projects listed in distros and stuff as highly rated stuff...redacted to stay civil).

Anyway, worst band goes to Hozier. That damn song just angers me.

hah yeah I like the first Loser Life record but I've heard some stories...

Anyway McPheeters is like an absolute hero of mine as a lyricist and a writer. Born Against / MRP / Wrangler Brutes are some of my absolute favourite ever bands. That's so mad that you got to play with them.

The singer from Neon Nazis actually was in Lord Galvar for a bit until the pink knife Oakland incident. Neon Nazis was another of Ronald's little bands (same guy all these bands...). Yea, I'll leave it at that, haha. But if you have heard stories...yea, didn't know word got that far haha!

McPheeters seemed like a cool dude. I mean I was pretty nervous and in kind of a haze, it being my first show but it was fun. I remember he was pretty energetic and looked like he had fun playing to a pretty small crowd in the crowd (the stage is like 4" tall and you can touch the ceiling in there...no place to go really). It was weird because MRP and Born Against were so big in my town but the show was so small. I don't think people realized who was in Wrangler Brutes yet or something.

Cheers man!

If you are saying this is a bad record you are full-on cray-cray

Ugh fuck. When someone thinks alt country=Nicklecrack you should be morally obliged, as well as legally protected in doing so,to reconstruct their obviously faulty thought process with a tyre iron.

I am saying it is a bad record with even worse fans, yes. Complete self congratulatory horseshit filler for pop punk sex pests who think they're like 'totally like political, and making a difference!' by listening to it.

No offense but fuck you! You're doing exactly the same thing you got mad at me for. That's not at all why I listen to the record. I prefer the band's current, more moderate politics. I listen to it so I can pump my fist in the air and sing AND JUST LIKE JAMES, I'M DRINKING IRISH TONIGHT and MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARY, THERE IS HOPE FOR US
