Also a fan of the DBA Interstellar OD, it's like the 250 on crack...
The DOD 250 is one of those pedals that's been on my wish list for ages, but there was always something else that came inbetween...:s

I may get some heat for this, but imo DBA is usually grocely overpriced for :s

And isn't the big spider more of a vintage-y voiced medium gain octave up fuzz? Cause I'm kinda looking for a high gain od/distortion, sorta like a rat but with more grit/bass.

There's a pretty reasonably priced Fuzz War in the classifieds. It seems like a pretty solid simple dirt box. Anyone have any experience with this one?

This is the correct answer.

These are still kinda new to me but the Lastgasp Devil Tail is great for a dose of high gain distortion. It has a three band eq too so it's pretty versatile. The other is the Lastgasp Steroid O.D., has a selectable boost for the high, mid, and lows plus a limiter. Both are great sounding and stack in interesting ways.

It was alright. UG really likes it, but I just thought it was a good sounding fuzz. I dunno, not my favorite but not bad by any means.

Yea, I've always heard good things about a blowerbox.

Mr. Black thunderclaw was solid but kinda boring. It did exaclty what it supposed to and the eq was pretty good. Much better than a lot of distoritions I've used but its still just a distortion if you know what I mean?

As UG said, DevilTail is good too. It actually has a really nice (well I mean good and mean) that fits in well with what I like. I like it way better than the thunderclaw and stuff.

Fuzz War is awesome heavy with a wide range of tones. It's that classic DBA overblown sound.

I recently pulled it off my board, because I'm on a Rangemaster kick, but the Tech 21 SansAmp is perfect for what you want.

I mean the original or "Classic" version. They're great for taking a clean amp, and adding a nice warm midrange and some very amplike and touch/vol knob responsive light grind/crunch to the tone, and easy to dial in to work like that at any volume level. They also stack well with other dirt.

Truthfully, I got the Rangemaster clone (Keeley Java) to prolong the life of my original and now going on 25 yr old SansAmp, so it's now off my main board and usually just used along with my LSTR at home on a small diy board (spare piece of wood).

I love a P Bass or downtuned guitar + EQD Monarch at 18v with my YBA1 into a 2x10 / 4x12. Gritty in a way that compliments the amp, can add silly bass - with guitar esp. Pharaoh up front with downtuned guitar, diodes out, fuzz cranked, volume at 2 o'clock, tone back @ 8-9 o'clock, treble @ 1-2 o'clock. Monarch is gain maxed, volume to under feedback, treble noon, bass @ 1-2 o'clock, or more. Monarch stacks great with a lot of fuzz and ODs too, so you can preamp it with overdrive on hand.

Megalith is sick for slow stuff too, compression-sag at high volumes is sweet with bass, esp with two rigs. More dollars tho!

i've been using a mesa v-twin alot over the last few months since I rediscovered them. it'd be perfect if the EQ was tweaked a bit, didn't have switching latency issues, and didn't have that trucker fucker plating on it.

My go to’s:

Fryette SAS : Yes, I bring it up in damn near every dirt thread, but I use it for damn near every dirty reason… It’s a monster. Yes it’s not available in everyone’s local shop, and it doesn’t have a super flexible control setup with all sorts of extra switches and what not. It doesn’t need to. It’s a grindy ass tube amp - EF86 one at that - in a palm size, <$100 box. Want just a touch of dirt and compression, it’s there. Want a whole range of flavors of dirt, oh yeah it’s there. Want dying collapsing amp sounds, god yes. Brutal volume on tap, top mount jacks, all sorts of texture. I imagine this is what the Fuck and Mini want to sound like.

Zoom Ultra Metal : Lots of gain and a super versatile EQ means if you like the voicings it’s a must try. Me, when I’m not using it as a high gain EQ either in a feedback loop or stacked with a bunch of other dirt, it’s a great low gain but HEAVY OD. Chunk, thump, grunt.

FabTone : Love it, have had one forever, but still somewhat surprised at the context it’s being discussed here. 1) I use it for push things over the top, never as an always or often on, base kinda sound. 2) I’ve never owned an HM-2 (i know, i know…) to do a personal comparison, but I’ve yet to hear an HM demo that has the general spectrum depth and low end crush of the FabTone.

Moog MF Drive. If I was starting new, or had the space money or inclination for another drive, that’s where I’d start.

Lotsa suggestions to check out, It'll take a little time to look into everything. It's good to have a ton of options instead of having to prawl the bst section for months before that one particular pedal pops up...

I'll get back to guy guys when I'm home. Cheers...
