Yeah it really did kinda surprise me... it just had never really occurred to me that I could try the guitar volume knob approach with keys. I think the real question now is if the same sort of thing happens with the volume output of a more oscillator based or digital synth.
Coming at it as a total novice, I kinda think they wouldn't behave in quite the same way because the signal character/tonality stays pretty uniform with those kinds of keys as you turn down, vs something like a guitar knob that loses both volume and some tonality, or for lack of a more scientific term, "oomph." Would love someone with better circuit knowledge to set me straight here...
