I don't always anything in terms of gear.
It's what the moment requires, nothing more, nothing less.
Sometimes that's six delays, fifteen fuzzes, and variable hell into three amps.
Sometimes it's a guitar into a bass amp set dead clean.
And of course the U2 dude uses it constantly, it's their signature "what does this band sound like" thing.
It's like asking why the Police have chorus and flange on everything.

I bet that is magnificent.
And now that you say that about The Police, I see what you mean. And have Message in a Bottle stuck in my head.

he admits as much. There's a video where he plays a riff and it sounds all U2 ish then he gets his tech to turn off everything and it sounds crap. And he's all like "haha pretty boring now dudes haha".
I can't stand their music but I do think the edge is rad at using effects.

It's great!
It's overacted in parts, and some of the jokes fall flat, but that kinda just makes it better. And Bill Bailey is the star. Because the other Irish bloke is the focal point it lets Bill just kinda, Bill it up. Definitely worth a binge watching session.

I remember Omar Rodriguez saying something similar about his lack of real skills, in some interview/clip a saw a while ago. Something about being unable to impress a crowd with just an acoutsic guitar, the way his buddy John Frusciante can. Doesn't make him an inferior musician imo, if anything I can appreciate that guys like Omar and the edge are humble, honest, and even a bit apologetic about their gear dependency. U2 is still the most overrated annoying pop rock band of the last 30 years though. Foo Fighters have been trying hard to steal that title btw.

The thing is that there's an expectation of "can entertain a crowd with an acoustic guitar" at all makes me laugh hysterically.
By that logic, I should be able to take a guitarist and give them a cello and tell them to rock out.
That is, providing there's *any* obligation to entertain a crowd. I fought with the business on that one for ages - I promosed to be real and in the moment, and nothing more, to my fans - if that meant an acoustic show, by gods, I'd do it - but if it was *my* reason for doing it, not anything more. I remember the stares I got in some venues for playing with feedback in the early 90s. I equally remember the stares from people who were angry I *didn't* play with feedback at a show. Etc.
But I was never doing it for the base "entertain", let alone in a form not my choosing.

Because they're cool and the 80's were a hell of a time?
My take on Delay. I have 2 Delay pedals.
A TC Flashback and Pigtronix Echolution 2.
Pigtronix has every feature I want in a delay. Everything. Presets, deep editing, stereo ins/outs, modulation, all kinds of junk.
Flashback is all of the "mandatory" sounds and features and is easy to navigate between them without presets. I likely wouldn't take Echolution 2 to a show unless I had the means to replace it. I also like the switchable trails, kill dry and the way they handle "tap tempo".
I used to have DD-5,6,7 and two Carbon Copies. They helped show me what I wanted and what I'd actually use in a delay pedal.
