ALL. They survived two singer changes. The first singer, Dave Smalley, never properly suited them anyway. Scott Reynolds was my favourite, but Chad Price is great too.

And Black Flag, so long as we forget about new Black Flag. Never really liked Morris much. Cadena and Rollins were my favourites.

I really like John Bush's vocals - they're pretty much the best stereotypical tough guy metal dude vocals around - and he's really good live, but his vocals never really worked in Anthrax. Doesn't help that the material they wrote was light years better in the Belladonna days.

What about Fates Warning? Both eras are super different and both rule.

and while POT and ATL were great most of the Joey era wasn't much better song wise than the John era, I liked SOWN, stomp 442 about half of Vol8 [I haven't lessened to anything post this album... as much as their "classic" era or whatever.. they were one of my faces when I was 14 Really, Killer Bees kills too and Scott sings all over that thing.. kind'a always wanted to hear them as a 3 piece

no one's mentioned black sabbath, right? i mean, in my heart, the first five albums are the core of the sabbath experience and that was what mattered to me as youngster. but if we're talking about who "survived" a singer change, then i think they count. i don't know that you'd say they were a better band or not with dio, but it was different and kind of refreshing and dio era sabbath is really killer. in some ways you could say they survived because of the singer change. ozzy was off the chain at that point and the band was fizzling out. dio brought new life for a little while.

Even though Tony Martin is a bit generic he was pretty rad too. headless Cross is badass.

When I was 11, I bought No Exit after seeing the video for Silent Cries on Headbanger's Ball. Then I dug deeper and discovered the Arch era (my favorite, though I do enjoy both). Specter Within and Awaken the Guardian are two of my favorite Metal albums of all time.

Just a few thoughts:

Cannibal Corpse:
Chris Barnes > Corpsegrinder

CB is just eerie to meet in real life while corpsegrinder is an absolute douche. I've had the pleasure of seeing / meeting both, and while SFU is boring as piss live I find corpsegrinders unending stationary hair twirling is just abhorrent and stagnant. Now as far as commerical success yes they did survive, but to me musically they did not.

Alice in Chains:
Layne Staley > New guy

This, this needs no argument. If you think anyone can one up Layne's lyrics and passionate performances then you have no soul.

Napalm Death:
Barney > Lee

The short shorts, the stage presence, that guttural growl unheard of at the time = winnah!

Dillinger escape Plan:
Dimtri > Greg

This one is tough because I can totally respect both of them for what they have contributed to the band, and the band definitely survived and thrived after Dimitri left, but I gotta give it up to the big D for nostalgia. Seeing them in 98 for the first time, never having even heard their name before, was a mind blowing experience that i attribute to one of the best shows of my life.

Alice in Chains-Exactly! Why the hell didn't they just change the fucking name of the group? Or at very least have Cantrell, who did a ton of the singing and his own amazing solo albums, do the singing? I mean no offense to the new guy, but they will NEVER be Alice in Chains to me. Fucked up.
