Up next, I got the Fuzzhugger Magic Meter. This thing freakin' rocks! The active EQ circuit is great for sculpting the tone. You can really dial it in if it's too mid-rangey or too much high-end. I didn't much care for the magic mode nor the second clipping stage. I found my sweet spot was level at 12, treble at 10, mids at 12, bass at 2, gain1 all the way up, clip1 at about 4, gain2 at about 9, and clip2 all the way down. Nice fizzy, crunchy power chords. This pedal seems to sound best with dyads and octaves but isn't too muddy with 3rds and 7ths thrown in, which is great. The tone is hard for me to describe, but it's definitely feeling like the tops of the signal are being clipped at high amplitudes while single nodes and quiet chords sort of glide under the clipping radar. Very expressive with dynamics.

Just scored a Redwitch Fuzz God II and a Blackout Effectors Twosome: fix'd fuzz and blunderbuss fuzz and also a 3-knob DIY version of the Colorsound fuzz box. All those will be up next!

Good for you!

The Fuzz God II is all kinds of awesome, too bad I can't really find good use for it in my current band :s

ok so I played the Blackout Effectors Seriously Special Twosome. First side: Blunderbuss fuzz. On retrospective comparison, this one sounds a lot like the Algal Bloom to my ears, at least on my preferred settings. Which isn't bad at all, because the Algal Bloom is rocking, and so is the Blunderbuss. To me it's just a little fuzzier and less-defined than the Algal Bloom; I think this is coming from the fact that the Blunderbuss uses mixed silicon/germanium construction, whereas I set the Algal Bloom to full silicon; I guess I just like that sound a little better. It seems to not quite be as 'warm' as the germanium or as thick and crunchy, but it handles 3rds and 7ths without much fuss. Overall the Blunderbuss sounds really cool, I like it.

Next up was the Fix'd on the second side. At first I was struggling with the settings to find something I liked, but I finally stumbled upon a smooth velcro-like sound with both fuzzes and the tone controls engaged, and the boost off. The fix'd excels at single-note stuff, really almost synth like in it's overtones and sustain. Cool for solos. Also chords are very interesting and fuzzed out, but as long as you stick to root+5+octave it seems to be ok and belch the chord out.

Together? Wow, too much for me and my single coil love...

Today I played the Fuzz God II and the Colorsound 1-knob fuzz (in a special 3-knob version).

First the Fuzz God II. By far the most aggressive sound of all the fuzzes I have worked with so far, I found the sweet spot right with the gain doubled and the volume pretty far up, along with the sputter max'ed (no starve) and the fuzz about noon. I couldn't hear any difference with the treble boost switch. With single coils, this thing is a MONSTER. Chords are super chunky and anything complex turns into a warm fuzzy mush. It's the power chords that rule this box, that's one thing. With a hum bucker, the notes just jump off the fretboard and seem to sustain forever. The pedal isn't noisy, which is surprising considering how much gain it has on tap. Now the lightning bolt mode....I don't understand this one. Obviously it forces the pedal into self oscillation but I'm just not a fan. Neither was my cat...

Second the 3-knob version of the 1-knob Colorsound. Wow, time machine here. Takes you back with the honky midrange and overdriven sounds. Best came from the hum bucker tones, which were nice and crunchy at the peaks, with sonic clarity, handling 3rds and 7ths without drama. Probably won't stay on my pedalboard, but is a really cool fuzz and neat effect and sound.
