Honestly, this may be the most versatile option. There are loads of great free apps (or next to free). Even if you don't already have one the price of an iPad plus a cheap usb controller will be close to the range of a lot of the hardware synths already talked about here. With IOS you can have poly synths, mono synths, drum synths, DAWs, samplers, effects, plus a convenient way to post on gear forums while taking a shit. If you have a pc/mac then that opens a whole 'nother door of GAS. I have and use the Native Instruments stuff on a daily basis. When it comes to poly synths and you're on space/budget limits you can't beat software.

For me, droning is all about modulation, modulation, modulation. I don't know of any entry level keyboard synth that would satisfy me in that aspect, and out of respect I won't start talking about modular. The Nord Lead 3 was great for that, but that's putting you in an all new price range. The Microbrute would actually be pretty cool if you had some external modulation sources to send to the patch matrix... like the Moog CP-251 or even the Copilot Broadcast or EHX sequencer. What about all those synths with the word "drone" in the name? Also, lots of goodies in this thread.

Yep, Animoog delivers.
