What are some weirder unsung od/distortion boxes out there?

I don't know why the Trombetta stuff isn't discussed more here. I'm on the wait list for a Tornetta but in the mean time I have a Mini-Bone and it's my current favorite fuzz. With the guitar volume backed off (particularly in germanium mode) it gets a nice OD sound, but with the guit cranked you can get into some really great territories.

Honorable mentions to the Malekko B:Assmaster, and the Basic Audio Zippy.

Welcome aboard. It's a good point on Trombetta--cool sounding fuzzes that don't get a lot of attention. I wish I knew more about them, but do I gather right that they tend to be more custom than a fixed set of consistently made models? That tends to obscure what a builder is up to for folks who aren't in the loop.

Pretty far from obscure, but since they usually cost a fraction of what new boutque superfuzz clones go for: FZ-2.

And even less popular, probably cause it's too conservative for the doom and noise crowds, and not enough of a straight tonebender/fuzzface clone for the vintage purists: FZ-3.
Super useful, super cheap. It doesn't sound gnarly or ground shaking, but thanks to it's distortion-y character, it can easily be used as an always on dirt pedal. As far as I know of it's a relatively unique design.

I said it before, I'll say it again...Boss clearly proved they know how to make a great fuzz pedal. So It makes no sense at all to me that the world's biggest pedal company now makes only one fuzz pedal....A digital one

The BOSS FZ-2 is pure awesomeness! I had to sell my first exemplar a few years ago and last year I was fortunate to grab a pristine looking FZ-2 with its box for a good price. It's definitely a keeper. Lots of good sounds hidden in that pedal!
And at least BOSS is getting on the right track again with their new Waza Craft product line. Those digital dirt pedals aren't too appealing anymore as it seems. Excellent!

Not sure there, the Adaptive Distortion is actually pretty damned impressive.

All the MDP stuff (it, Tera Echo, etc) are built into the GT-100/001s with the added bonus of assigning anything to expression or other pedals, or automating stuff as well.

The Adaptive Distortion is smokingly good at balanced high-gain sound - sharp, bright, and balanced in a way across strings, notes, and chords that nothing else I've played quite does.

Not sure I'd want it as my only distortion, but I can't say that about *any* I've played or owned.

I've heard good things about the DA-2 as well! But apart from that people with tube amps said that other digital dirt pedals like the BC-2, ST-2 and the FZ-5 sound bad through their rig. And modding these pedals is impossible, of course.

I have nothing against COSM and sorts as long as it's well done. The Fender Reverb pedal has lots of fans for example. And I really like the BOSS RT-20 rotary pedal. My old KORG BX-3 double manual stage organ sounds gorgeous through it and people simply love it when they hear me playing with that combo.

I think they are unsung in terms of using them as an OD. I mean, the Arc Flash is the most brutal fuzz I've ever heard - it just sounds like components frying and exploding. Inwould never have thought it'd sound great as an OD.

That is why ptd stuff isn't discussed here. The amount of ILFers who have the patience and financial discipline for wait lists is awefully low. Instant fuzz gratification is the best fuzz gratification

would love to try some ptd stuff but I just have to be honest with myself and realise it isn't going to happen. Damn you BST, damn you!

A friend of mine has an older Trombetta Mini Bone with a switch instead of a pot which is pretty good, the other Trombetta stuff I tried I found to be quite shit though, no punch or balls, but then again that's a bit of a thing for me, I also say the same about quite a few other dirt pedals...

I like the HM-2, you can get some pretty weird sounds out of that.
The Henretta Pinkman I just got also comes to mind, it's a fuzzy and dirty overdrive with it's own character, nice and dynamic and touch sensitive...

I have the FRV-1 and RE-20 and I love them. If the RT-20 is just as good I'm definitely going to have to look into it.
