Re: How are we not talking about the new Sleep track?
I was kind of hoping when Dopesmoker got the Southern Lord treatment last time and was overhauled again (I thing HoF's Art of Self Defense was done at the same time, as well) that there would be talk of a HM remaster. That record would be pretty much a world beater if it sounded purdy.

Re: How are we not talking about the new Sleep track?
I think the only thing that really bothers me about the production on Sleep's Holy Mountain is how fucking quiet it is. I always have to crank the volume knob on whatever system I play it through, and it STILL isn't loud enough. Though, I'm not sure if Sleep could ever be loud enough. It sounds exponentially better with every ascending knotch on the dial...
Also, just watched The Holy Mountain. Shit's whack.

Weirdly, I have the same problem with SL's Dopesmoker
quiet, so I have to crank it up
and yeah, Dase, i'm sure you're right
They definitely helped start a "genre" in my opinion. It's great music and I also agree it needs a remaster. Maybe one day...

I make pedal demos as East Stomp Boutique - http://www.youtube.com/c/eaststompboutique

Re: How are we not talking about the new Sleep track?
Assorted thoughts:
Tee Pee's dopesmoker is the definitive version of that record.
Holy Mountain's never going to be remastered because Earache controls the rights to the album and they have a very contentious relationship with Sleep.
First three Om records (and the first two singles and the first two live records) are untouchable, but Pilgrimage has to get the nod for the production. Some of Albini's best work.
I love the production on Holy Mountain.
I really need to take pictures of my Om collection.

Was not aware of the earache thing. Who owns the rights to the recording?
Pilgrimage is pretty sounding, indeed.

I love all of the Om output, truly. Chris and Emil are different drummers but both complement the records they're on beautifully, and I've seen Om put on some incredible performances--the ICA in Boston show supporting God is Good was mind-blowing.
High On Fire's last two records didn't grab me as much as the earlier ones did, but they have fucking SLAYED every time I've seen them play. Matt Pike is the real deal.
Sleep (re)combines some of the best elements of both band's output, and it's just awesome to have new riffage from them--never mind being able to see them play together
I now feel the need to spin Holy Mountain today...

Pretty sure Earache does -- Sleep's said they don't get any money from any edition of the record that's being sold.Iommic Pope wrote:Was not aware of the earache thing. Who owns the rights to the recording?

And am I the only one who thought the last reissue on Southern Lord had the fucking stupidest artwork? I mean get real.....
What a shame we'll never get to hear the "FULL DYNAMIC RANGE" version of Sleep's Holy Mountain..... fuck Earache amirite lads?D.o.S. wrote:Holy Mountain's never going to be remastered because Earache controls the rights to the album and they have a very contentious relationship with Sleep.

yeah I loved the artwork, it's not like the original was any better, it's just Arik Roper's developed a fucktonne as an artist and could put a new spin on it.

Mind you I'm biased, I find it really hard to fault or dislike any of his work.

I think both versions of the Jersualem art are rad, too. Both versions:
