Whoa! Hold on now. So what your saying is that singers in metal don't actually mean what they scream, just cause it's metal and not punk based, haha? :P
I think the whole idea of "two camps" is just ridiculous. Greg, like most other singers or screamers (just ask them) definitely put a lot of emotion into it ( that's what music is, isn't it? channeling emotions. at least to me it is). But he definitely has shitload of techinique that he has mastered. If you want to sound good consistantly over long periods of time you will have to use some kind of technique. How much of this "technical" singing is done consciously or not, and whether you like to or are able to put it into words is something else. If you go out there and "just scream", you will ruin your voice pretty fast. As far as the two camps, there's always a blend of them going on. Getting it sound "like you fucking mean it" every time requires a fair share of technique.
yeah, I gotcha. In the interview (I have no idea how to find it) he was explaining that it was his personal preference to be screaming about things that he felt strongly about. There are a lot of metal bands with really good vocal technique that sing about space, monsters, evolution, science, weird conceptual shit, etc etc etc..... and it seems kind of ridiculous, even to me, to think that you're sooooooooo pumped about any of those "less heartfelt" topics that you want to scream about them.

In those cases, I think the voice (while metal-vocalizing) is an instrument more than something that's conveying deep emotional content. I'm not saying one way or the other is better or worse, just that they seem to be two different things. To me, a lot of the "Zen of Screaming" bands sound very much alike. It's hard to tell some of the singers apart at first listen. I like plenty of "emotional" stuff and plenty of black metal and whatnot.
I hope my ramble makes sense.

This is why I sometimes just stop singing during shows. I write shitty lyrics that don't really care about.

Hot topic radio metal has become universally bland and uniform. Over-processed and to similar. Same goes for the guitars, really the whole production. I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between the bands. Get outside what is commercially exploited and there is stil some killer shit going on. I'm pretty sure Matt Pike means every word he's bellowing out haha.
