So let's all talk about the embarrassing way in which I solved this problem. Since I use the Ampeg as a clean pedal platform, I've been running a lot of master and not much preamp. Spent some time dicking around with it the other day and decided to lower the master and raise the preamp quite a bit, since it stays clean until it's dimed anyhow. Boom, problem (mostly) solved. Much brighter, less mud, more sparkles in mah tones.

This leads me to believe that the amp is biased very cold and/or Ruby 6v6s are muddy pieces of shit. Any thoughts? How much does it cost for a tech to rebias an amp?

I dunno that particular amp but it's not uncommon for a sound to gain brightness and sparkle if you turn up the gain (up to a certain point of course).
Just as another example, if you put higher gain preamp tubes in your amp the sound usually also tends to get brighter, especially on cleaner amps.

Touche - I never knew that since all of my previous amps have had shit loads of preamp gain. I did swap out the preamp tubes for some Tung Sols, which are supposed to be pretty gainy, so that makes sense.

Hey, there's always stuff to find out about one thing or the other, as long as you're happy now, right? ;) :)

I had a gvt-15 112 combo and as soon as I pulled out those shitdick 6v6s, and that shitdick 70-80 garbage speaker and replaced with blackplate GEs and an emi govner that amp ruled. . .

Did you have to rebias when you swap the 6v6s?

Good news then. Looks like I'll be looking for some powah tubes.
