This is how I do things, if anything is in the back row, it is an always on pedal for a certain song or a tuner.

I don't want to hear a song

I want some crazy sweep picking and insane riffs

Its like.... whats the point of an Iron Maiden song without a solo

I bought Christian Muenzers solo album, and I will buy the second

I defy any anyone who has an iota of power metal cheese in their bodies to not love this song. I think Yngwie's distortion tone is fucking rad - chunky as hell (even though I hate strats) and Mats' vocals are sick. That was 1998 and I saw him a year or two back with Krux and he was just as awesome.

Fuck it, here is some awesome Krux as well.

On the flip side, I wonder how many people would really be able to define the line between "obnoxious wank fest" and "serving the song."

For example, there's no real plausible difference between, say, Earth 2 or a Yngwie record. Or The Grimmrobe Demos and a Steve Vai LP. They're both records that bring the guitar to the forefront at the expense of everything else.

I'd say the distinction comes down to an emphasis on musicality vs. technicality.
Every Yngwie song I've heard has really just seemed to have been a showcase of technical skill.
I would argue that it it sacrifices musicality to highlight how the dude shreds.

Earth 2 does the opposite of that.
You never say "Oh shit he's so good at guitar!"
It's all about the guitar, but it's not at all about the playing.

(That's not necessarily to say it's not a wank fest.
But it's definitely not about being good at guitar.)

I'm really not trying to maliciously trash someone (anyone) who is feverishly devoted to their craft, attentive to detail & able to perform complicated stunts at an advanced level while making me look like I'm moving in slow motion.

But when I hear that kind of fancy pants showboating every other beat...and witness that specific brand of cockrock past the 80s...
It's like I'm I'm transported to a school talent show/battle of the bands...or a popular music store in the mid afternoon when school's out.

It's so dated, IDK. It's like a mullet. A perfectly coiffed, luxurious mullet

Whatever, I'm full of shit.

Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai probably don't blaze it 25/8 though, so, y'know, invalidated.

Yngwie can shred but that's the entire point of the song. Van Halen is obviously "a talented guy" but every song of theirs fucking blows hard....

Sound of Perseverance is a great example of technichal ability and great songwriting.....

I appreciate some of Gangway Malmsteem's work, "Rising Force" slips on occasionally if I'm in the mood.

The man has a heck of a sense of melody but it's not for everybody.

I don't think I'd want to listen to it more than occasionally but he was (perhaps is, not sure, his new material hasn't interested me in a long, long time) a fine technician and writer of stuff in that vein.
