Found it.
EHX really isn't as bad as people say component choice wise from what i've seen (which is a lot) they did all use the right values not just 'that'll do' it's just component tolerances were a lot worse back then unless you paid a lot more for parts (this was when the difference was a lot larger than it is today) and EHX has always been about value for musicians... the Small Stone being their big seller back in the day as it offered 4 stage phasing cheaply at a time phasers weren't so cheap to make. If I built 10 big muffs out of cheap Tayda parts today with ceramic caps and carbon comp resistors i'd expect each to still sound different by +/-20% (the tolerance of the caps). If it counted you can be sure they used the right value, on many schematics important values are annotated with specific tolerance values which from any pedal i've seen, they stuck to. I think pretty much any vintage effect suffered from this, only the Japanese companies really had tighter controls for obvious reasons which is when 2 units sounding the same started to come about.
One of the big reasons for different tones is also the amount of redesigns they used to do but in the same boxes with the same names.
Nice. I recall seeing that and likely commented in the same thread. Bolded emphasis is mine.
Some "redesigns" are the product of happenstance, and aren't official versions.
Choosing component types and where/when they got used was anything but uniform.
Matching tolerances is one thing to consider, but the composition of the components, and how a hodgepodge of them interact together is something else entirely.

I thought the cosmi was great but not quite the sound I was looking for, but if you like that sound it's really good at it.
I'm really wanting to try a polytope because it can do more vibrato stuff too!

I go straight for either a bandpass chorus or flange for that type of sound or the detune options in the old Quadraverb or ART rack units.
In a pedal, don't know if I can get the level of control required to tune inwhat the OP is referencing.

I would suggest the Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus. It's rather un-chorus-like. It has a rather phasey/vibey thing going on.

It's a clone/based-on the CE-1, no?

Supposedly, yes. Well, the circuit isn't, I don't think. Acccording to the maker it's a "sonic replica" of the CE1. I can't really comment on how closely it compares to the CE1, circuit wise or sound wise. But what I would say is that the Voodoo Lab can be quite un-chorus-like (in a good way), to my ears.

I don't think it sounds anything like a CE-1 but indeed it's a good call for someone who doesn't like the typical chorus sound because it really has it's own subtle thing going on.
