Right. How much would Ryan Summit asked to license his unicorn art?

A few hundred G's at most.

rustywire wrote: A big part of their allure is the fact that pre-bankruptcy, no 2 are exactly alike. You can open up a dozen of any Muff, EM, DMM etc and upon comparing the circuit board you'll see *substitutions* were made here and there with regards to which diodes and caps were used where and how many (substituting 2 of a kind for 1 of another).
The builders used whichever parts they grabbed that were (close to) within spec...and being that all electronics are not equal, this leads to deviation and supposed *mojo* in certain units, in certain rigs where others sound good but not magical like the special ones. It's like a quest for the grail.
The modern big boxes and XO series abandon this bricoleur experimentation for standardized, cost-efficient production. They're pretty much all the same inside. Hear one example of their new pedals, you've heard them all. That's really sad...along with the fact they're seemingly disposable like dollar store products.
The old ones could easily be modded/repaired and hold their value on the used market, or appreciate as assets. Not-so with the micro component surface mount shit. And at ~65bucks new, repair costs for even a simple component failure practically render the pedal "totaled"

great points!
My main beef is that for a brand that was able to release very innovative and unique pedals that are now classic, they've gone to fuck in the late few years. I think that reviving the DMM with tap and cool extra stuff was good, that's the kind of forward thinking when you make your classic pedal more "up to date", however, it's getting worse and worse... they started to aim for cheap prices which gives them little space to operate and with that being said, fuckery like this and the other drives is not surprising
to clarify - i think reissuing Hot Tubes was great and it actually honours the old graphics, so that WAS good

Nels Cline is the only one that springs to mind and "rock star" is kind of a loose use of the term, even though he's the shit
Don't forget Meh-er
Yeah but he sucks shit and can kiss my grits

i didn't see the word clone mentioned anywhere in the ehx copy--it's described as an alternative. if ehx want to make a $70 clean boost/overdrive, why not. and i don't give a toss about the name or graphics. the $40 lbp-1 is first in my signal chain and always on--this new pedal could be useful, and it's available and affordable. that sounds like what a pedal should be. and regarding ehx, they've been putting out some cool stuff--i love my freeze. maybe they don't appeal to everyone, but i don't think they're trying to. and i don't think ehx are putting bill finnegan out of business. he's selling his stuff as fast as he can make it (which isn't very).

Something like this? (huge image)
(If I had the artwork before I drilled the case I wouldn't have had the "Klonopin" knob obscuring the horn.)

I think we are starting to see a trend in the pedal market. The nature of low priced, tiny, high quality effects (mostly clones) will start to shrink the backyard production and growth we've seen in the number of boutique builders over the last 10 years. The era of producing another orange squeezer, distortion +, fuzz face, etc... and slapping your own 'look and feel' on it is on the decline. None to soon if you ask me. Price wars and the increase in acceptance (and capabilities) of digital or analog path/digital control effects are also starting to increase the barrier to entry into the market.
I'm not saying boutique fuzz face clones are going away, but I think most of the mystery has been stripped off... and it going to get harder to get $200+ for your fancy 'lovingly crafted' tweaked clone.

Well, if I had the option of playing with a Centaur or not, I'd always opt for with. (Can't really speak on klones.)
